Doesn't appear to be a Far Cry thread and, given how much I enjoyed 3 and 4, I think it deserves its own.

The setting sounds promisingly picturesque, and lots of potential to explore deep south gothic True Detective-style bizznizz.https://www.theverge.com/2017/5/24/15685670/far-cry-5-setting-art-e3-2017-ubisoft

That aside, shooting right-wing gun-toting US nutjobs in the face will be a lot more satisfying than the previous games baddies so I welcome this. Though it's a fucking brave move from Ubisoft given not just the current US political climate but also the fact that a chunk of their audience may end up identifying with the antagonists enough to be annoyed about it all.

Only played 3 and 4, really enjoyed them both. I think 3 is the better of the two because Vaas.

I enjoyed 2, despite it having numerous flaws. Played all the way to the end, and then re-ran from a late save a few times for the different endings.

Never finished 3.

Didn't play 4.

Played 3 & 4.

3 had a very enjoyable campaign with some good missions and excellent characters but was let down by dream sequences, being too easy and open world fat that needed trimming.

4 had a less enjoyable campaign with less good missions and less excellent characters and was also let down by dream sequences, being too easy and with open world fat that needed trimming. To add insult to injury it involved a retreading of the 3's boring opening gameplay loop and the two factions thing was boring and locked off campaign missions.

If they can shrink 5's world (if you never visit 75% of the world on foot whats the point), manage a decent campaign (more buried in bodies and interesting stuff like that) with some good characterisation (we know they've got it in them) that doesn't involve kooky druggies (one nutjob villian is ample) and yet still ramp up the difficulty for outpost captures; possibly including a better hierarchy of standard enemy types (light/heavy/sniper just isn't interesting), then I'll be happy.

Pro-tip: you can restrict the search to thread titles only, so if you do that then searching for Far Cry almost instantly turns up the old threads.

ETA: in fact I've just realised you can also restrict the results to only show threads as well which is pretty effective and reveals we've got three different threads dedicated to Far Cry 2: search.php?keywords=far+cry&terms=all&author=&sc=1&sf=titleonly&sk=t&sd=d&sr=topics&st=0&ch=300&t=0&submit=Search

I’ve gotta say this arcade mode looks interesting but I stand by my comments above that more enemy types are desperately needed (I’ve not read ote to suggest either way so I could be pleasantly surprised).

Played 3 for a bit but the un-skippable waffle got on my teets. See also - 4. If they could remove all of that terrible story telling and just let you get down to the goody they would be much better games. However, it is highly likely I will get 5.

Well, at least until State Of Decay 2 comes out. Apparently it's a co-op zombie romp, what could go wrong?

I liked the story in fc3. At least it dared to be different, and Vaas was a great villain. It was unfortunate that it got so much heat from gaming sites.

 They're just opinion pieces and I doubt they impacted the success of Far Cry 3 either way. And that notwithstanding, I'm more than happy to see proper grown-up writing about games because I want good plots and well written characters in my video games. Moaning about that would seem to be playing into the argument that video games can't and shouldn't be taken seriously, which is horseshit.

I agree, with you, and for all intents and purposes at the time RPS was still my favourite website. What I was arguing is that Ubisoft writers were heavily criticised for daring to do something different, (after all, what other game has one ending where your character dies in a sacrificial altar after having an orgasm? :P), while the vast majority of games, even those with supposed "good" writing like Uncharted or Bioshock are lauded as cinematic masterpieces or whatever.

Obviously, the opportunity to shoot dumb americans makes FC5 even more appealing. But for FC5 to be even better, i just need 2 things:
- No minimap. Minimap is a curse. How many times we are looking at the minimap searching for icons instead of the screen? Just gives us a compass on the top of the screen like Skyrim.
- Rewards other than collectibles for exploring. Hope they won't be afraid to go even more RPG and give us rewards like weapons, armours, or even better, some hidden quests, for exploring.

This is excellent news, also because I thought that Ubisoft nowadays could only make the "Icon-cleaning game", and this is a showing that they can take more risks. Anyway, i still haven't played FC4 (even though loved FC3, blood dragon, but thought Primal was meh), so i might play FC5 in 2025.

Reviews have dropped, they are good-to-great across the board.

Most of the criticism are (a) doesn't do much new, very much more of the same (no worries, I liked 3 and 4 plenty) and (b) story is all over the place (that was also true of 3 and 4 eg. weird drug orgy sex scene thing in FC3 and the general awfulness of the main character in both games).

If you're the type to sneak around undetected with a bow making silent kills, well you'll have a distraction at least.

In 3 and 4 I pulled off some mad long-shot kills with the bowsT. I reckon I did more kills with the bows than everything else put together.

Here's a 75+ metre kill, first few seconds of the video:

I'll definitely get this, but not for a while. I'm generally okay with 'more of the same' but it doesn't feel like that long ago I played 4 so I'll wait until I'm less likely to suffer Far Cry-fatigue.

My FC4 tactics were typically

1) let loose the rampaging animals
2) blow up everything that is capable of blowing up
3) walk through the front gate and gat fools

I do step 3, step 1 then step 2 because style counts.

You walk into the place that is both where the wild animals will rampage, and in the blast area of the explosives, then free the wild animals and set off the explosives? It's novel, I'll give you that.
