Souls-like metroidvania? It's as good as that sounds.

It's kind of a shame that it's been release during a time when there's shit load of great games to occupy our time because the game is phenomenal.

Apparently it's a kickstarter game an' all. Who knew great games could arrive via that? No one. No one at all. Also, I'm not sure about the nationality of the developers but it has this fake Japanese language and kinda Japanese stylings that I really like. Are they Japanese? No one knows. No one will ever know.

Graphics: BEAUT
Sound: WUBBLY
How does it play: LIKE A DREAM. Only this is a dark and somber dream. I love Ori & The Blind Forest but now I love Hollow Knight.

Gerrit if you like:

1) metroidvania games; and,
2) yourself

Here's the release trailer:

This is right on the top of the of my want list. I hope the movement is not analogue so I can play with my Wii classic controller

As far as I know, it definitely is analogue.

Stop wanting and more getting.

Kind of a bummer since i feel analogue controls make 2d games less precise.

And no use in hurrying up to get it since i have a huge backlog of games to play.

38 hours later and I've got a 90% completion and I've found the true boss who is absolutely punishing me.

And I had enough punishment in the fecking White Palace which turned the game into Super Meat Boy, but that's only for the proper ending so if you don't want to do all that jazz then, say, I could have finished the game about 9 hours ago.

I'm not one to do collectibles and shit but ive been enjoying myself so much I've found 100% of the grubs.

I'd maintain that this game is super special.

Fuck this proper end boss though. I can't be arsed with his shit tonight. Gah.

I started playing and it's not analogue, which is an annoyance since the game doesn't allow for non x-input controllers even with x360ce.

I have to use xpadder.

It's one of my pet peeves when a developer makes a nice 2d platformer and force us to play with a gamepad that just doesn't play well with this kind of game.

As for the game, it's nice, but I feel the blue and grey palette will get boring soon

If it isn't analogue then I don't know what analogue means in this context. Sorry about that! :(

It's not all grey and blue by the way. It's quite the beautiful looking game and there's some really great artwork on show with a fabulous atmosphere to boot. I reckon it took a fair few hours to really open the world up though.

This game must have some of the best boss fights of all time. This is something that few game designers get right, but here they're just perfect.

Loved the Mantis Lords. "You thought you were go good for beating one? Now fight two at the same time".

Glad you're enjoying it!

I thought everything except the White Palace was just spot on.

Yes, I'm 21 hours in and i feel the game is outstaying its welcome. So i doubt i'll go for the 100% ending (also because one of the dream warriors is kicking my ass). There's a bit too much backtracking, like every time i want to upgrade the nail or buy a charm. The stag stations are too far apart.

It's still a fantastic game and probably the best non Castlevania metroidvania.

Which Dream Warrior is causing you some yip?

When I got stuck I'd always clear off and do something else, that way I wouldn't get bored. It only fumbled when I got stuck on the end boss. I'd 90%'ed it, which was absolutely fine with me and I could have done less and still been happy with it.

Yeah, he's a shit. I'm not sure whether I loaded up with that Joni's gem thing as you don't get much time to heal and the gem where you get a longer invincibility after a hit and just wailed on him.

My fave gem was the grub one which turns you into a grub so you can move about while you're healing. It's reet helpful.

I don't think I have that grub charm. I'm now in the Hollow Knight boss fight, and while it seems easy at first I haven't beat him yet because the fight is so long that i'll lose my concentration somewhere along the way.

I can't remember where I got the grub charm but I imagine it was given by the grubs after saving so many of them. Have you found the collector yet? He can help with finding more of them.

Oh and FYI you can finish the game and replay from the bench at any time thereafter if you want to come back later on. The Hollow Knight boss isn't too hard when you find the fight charm combo that works for you. Now the true boss? He can fuck off.

Done today at the first try. The Hollow Knight boss fight might be the saddest since Sif from the dark souls.

I don't think I'll bother with the "true" ending. I saw the last boss fight on youtube and i don't see how I'll ever beat that thing.

To commemorate "Satsuma" taking the wrapper off Zelda, I took the wrapper off this...

Some annoyances (teleporting enemies, hard to find map guys, those sodding bouncing mushrooms) but good thus rag.

The map guy is never too hard to find. Just follow his humming and the scraps of paper on the ground. I thought it was kinda cool knowing he's about and having to search an area for him.

Glad you're enjoying it though. It needs more love. Like me.

Also, there's an update coming in august with MOAR CONTENT.

There’s a distinct lack of lore videos or information on this game which is annoying. I didn’t learn until the other day, for example, about the Grub bloke you come across. The old grandpa grub who throws you stuff when you rescue his other grubs, remember him?

Turns out, if you get all the grubs back safely and then return to him at some point in the future he eats the other grubs. There’s way more to this game and it needs someone to do a vid on it.

Perhaps you should've got all the grubs then. (Like I did)

I still have yet to see all the new content, mind.

Erm, I did. He won’t do it unless you get them all back. He won’t eat them straightaway though - I think he eats them after Hollow Nest become corrupted maybe? I forget. It was in some video I watched.

12 June for the Switch.

Also it’s had a whole bunch of free DLC since release. Amazing for such a quality title. And cheaps too.

Hollow Knight is absolutely fantastic. It’s the best Dark Souls Metroidvania ever made. It’s beautiful, it’s challenging and it’s had a bunch of free DLC and post-content launch. It’s also one of the games that made me put down my controller because there was no way I was going to beat the secret true boss, which I’m kinda upset about cause I’m so crap.

There was supposed to be paid DLC coming out for it but...it’s now a FULL BLOWN SEQUEL!

SQUEE!

Did I mention SQUEEEEEE!

I’m going to say...yes. Much better but I’d also like to add that I fucking loved Salt & Sanctuary too. However Salt and Sanctuary was just 2D Dark Souls and this has the Metroidvania element to it. For the price that the original Hollow Knight is going for, you’d be a fool not to give it a go. A FULE I SAY.

I have it for Switch but I don't love it. Something about the controls doesn't gel for me. It feels a bit floaty and imprecise.

I’ve never heard anyone complain about the controls before. The reviews have always praised its tight and responsive controls. I certainly never had any issues, and I’d probably notice too because the boss fights can be so challenging if the controls were letting me down rather than my ability I’d probably have had a hissy fit on here.
