This is... well, y'know how people who like the original NieR always say "NieR is an awesome game hampered by shitty combat". Well they got Platinum in to sort that out for them.

It's awesome. You'll laugh, you'll cry, the music is some of the best you'll ever hear in a videogame.

Just, don't just play it through once. Really, don't just play though it once.

I really loved Nier and even liked the combat, so I might love this.

I'm doing Final Fantasy XV at the mo which has one of the Nier Automata tracks to listen to in the car. It's really nice.

This is on The List though.

You need to complete the game 3 (?) times to get the full story / true ending

I know very few 'people who game' in real life, but the few that i do have been raving to an almost frightening degree about how good this is. And not the Platinum combat (though apparently that is great fun) but more just the pure experience of it all. It's another one of those things that can only be done as a game and just wouldn't stand up in any other medium. Which I love, so I'm all in.

It's amazing. It's really is an experience you can only have as a videogame. It's also one of the darkest videogames I've ever played. Seriously.

ETA: The Platinum combat is fun, and gets rid of the "Yoko Taro games: amazing story, shit gameplay" thing that has dogged them since Drakengard. Saying that, it ain't Bayonetta, it's very much an action RPG.

This is the best video game I've played since Bayonetta - it does so many things with its story that couldn't be done in other media. It's a sort of mashup of Metal Gear Rising, Radiant Silvergun, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Secret of Mana.

Everything in it has a reason for existence, there's no fat there. I've spent 70 hours on it so far and it still feels super fresh. Like, everyone buy it.

:this:

Although I'm only 2+ hours in. This game is me.

Bayonetta/Shmup/RPG/Shadow of the Colossus/DMC

Has it's own feel though.

Like Dark Souls, I want to discover everything about it on my own.

There were some rumours that Wii U numbers would have been low, so he got one to make sure he could get it.

He's a hotshot lawyer so the money isn't a concern. He spent £50 on Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate to play it once with Dave and me.

Pffft. It was my suggestion to get MH cause I wanted a crack at it and thought it would be something we could get into. Turned out, you got a missus and we haven't played a game since.

And it wasn't very good, natch.

She's happy with me playing games, I just haven't had time apart from my iRacing commitments (and even those I've scaled back now). :(

I'm about 10 hours into this now, and that's from only sitting down to play it twice - once I start I just can't stop. (Using family sharing to borrow it from an American Friend, so both times I've been kicked off because it's gotten late enough he's wanting to play something)

It's out the steelbook.

I've only had about 2 hours today but this is reet up my alley. Plus I've already completed the game with the W ending. I'll add it to my Finish 52 and move on...

Took 10 hours to finish Route A, so I've technically finished a playthrough but it's clear that that's not the end of the story because the "ending" is rather unsatisfying.

I've started Route B and it started differently enough to the start of Route A but retreading some of the same game with another character isn't quite as interesting as I'd like.

... and I'm going to say that this is because the combat isn't as deep as it should be. I like these Bayonetta and Devil May Cry games, even if I'm not the best at learning their systems, but Neir is a button masher. I just couldn't fathom how to get any good or exciting combos going no matter how many times I changed up the weapons. It always came down to just smashing square or just mashing triangle. BUT that's enough for Route A because 2B's moveset is alright however once you change character you're stripped down to one move (smash square) and that character has a rubbish moveset with no combos at all for any weapons so suddenly the combat becomes a bit of a chore. Instead you're expected to do a hacking mini game for many enemies. In fact, combat is largely useless (no matter your level or power) for some enemies so you're forced to do the minigames. I didn't care for them much for regular enemies.

So, so far so good, and I must be about halfway through the story but I'm waiting for some revelations or something that blows my mind as to why this game is supposed to be so legendary. I can feel it bubbling underneath so maybe something exciting is coming up.

The second playthrough gets really good when the story takes you to the drowned ruins. Though I enjoy all the extra info you get playing as 9S anyway.

Finished all endings A-E. Gotta say, I really enjoyed it. There's some epic battles right at the end and some pretty touching scenes. I was surprised with the character switches and the lack of a certain playable character. Really nicely done.

Only problem is: I've only got a rudimentary grasp over what the fuck happened and now I've got to go and watch lore videos to figure it all out. I never managed to get into those bunkers with the exploding robots either or figured out how. I'm not playing Neir 1 but I might watch some lore videos on that to find out how it connects to this.

Seriously though, what a great game filled with a lot of heart and soul.
