Looking for Christmas presents for Mini Fop the First who has just turned 5.

We are planning on getting her some form of music player but getting stuck on format.

A CD player?
A record player?
A MiniDisc player?

The latter two are a bit spendy, given one can pick up a CD boombox for £20.

We want to get something physical so she can understand music as an object, look at sleeve notes etc. Also she can stick on a CD more easily than she can type and search for whatever on Spotify.

So:

What would your 5-year-old self prefer to receive for Christmas?

What was your first music player? (mine was something like this Sanyo jobber, which I had shared custody of with my brother, alternating weeks.)

I ony took my first CD player to the tip 2 weeks ago. Had it for 23 years.

CD player has the advantage of having vast amounts of cheap stuff available all over - every charity shop and jumble sale will have a stack of old CDs she can look through and spend her 50p on.

We got our kids mini CD players like these.

http://www.argos.co.uk/product/5545845 (newer version of what they have)

Although my Ms Zardoz (8) also has had an iPod for a couple of years too. She loves that for in the car.

Good Pavement reference.

I initially tried "Pigs they tend to wiggle when they walk" but it was too big for Grim...'s field.

Thanks Z, I think I'll get that in red!

I would definitely say a CD player. I remember not really being into owning music as such until about age 10 though, when I first started getting interested in the Charts, and going and browsing the albums for sale in the stores.

One plus point to my first player though: portable. So I could carry it around to the various rooms of the house. Also, integrated cassette player so I could record 'radio shows'.

A CD boombox, with an aux-in socket. Perfect way to start, plus when they eventually get an ipod/phone or whatevs they can still plug it in.

Bought Izzy a Frozen-themed CD player thing cheap as you like from Argos last year and some Disney music CDs. Still being used now, so I consider that a win.
