I played a lot of Mercenaries 2 over the weekend. It's fucking awesome. Technically it's EPIC FAIL, but in terms of fun it's EPIC WIN. It's one of those games that's rough as fuck, yet still brilliant. I'd used up my year's quota of "WHOA! LOOK AT THAT!" moments by Saturday lunchtime.

Imagine if someone hollowed out the corpse of Just Cause, filled it with EDF and then sewed it back up. It's like that.

You'll hear the same sound bites twelve times every minute. You'll see foliage that would have looked a bit rough in a PS2 game. You'll hardly ever die. And there are bugs aplenty.

But you'll be blowing up buildings and dodging the flaming wreckage of helicopters and driving bikes off the edge of mountains and calling in a helicopter to steal fuel tanks and dropping walkways on soldiers and having so much fun you just won't care.

It could be the best game ever and I still wouldn't touch it because of that FUCKING TV AD.

Is it better than Mercs 1, though? Doesn't really sound it from that...

As I said in the barg thread, EG gave it 5/10 with an average reader score of 4.3. I am quite willing to believe these people are idiots though if Rev keeps spunking :D

Rev Owen tells it like it is.

The pop-up is at times worse than on Two Worlds and it's arguably not as good as the original but the fun factor makes all the difference.

ie - the opposite of GTA4.

Exactly. It doesn't sound as if Mercs 2 is offering anything over and above the aceness of Mercs 1 - and in fact sounds like it's fallen short a bit.

I never played Mercs 1. Well, I played a bit of it on a demo pod and couldn't work out what I was doing, but I don't think that counts.

i'm sort of disappointed if that helps.

it is pretty shoddy but has these ridiculous explosions and co-op fun to win me over.

at a Morrisons-tastic £25 it'd be a good thing to get.

I haven't tried the co-op. I'm having enough fun just doing the one player stuff.

The map's pretty big, too. I've still got a third of it blacked out.

It also has the added bonus of being forwards-compatible with the 360. Win.

I traded Soul Calibur IV in for Mercenaries 2. Best decision I've made in months.

I might rent it off love film, I got the godfather off them last week and its a bit too much last gen to really enjoy after stuff liek gta 4 and that.
The voice acting seems really good though but fuck me the aiming system and driving are fucking horrendous.

Also got unreal tournament 3 which is alright, single player seems pretty tedious and multiplayer is quite good but Its no team fortress 2 so I might send that back aswell.

Mercenaries 2 is Mercenaries 1, except not grey-brown. Mercenaries 2 has more and faster cars, bikes, boats (that's probably not a good thing), and you can swim.

Ignore the silly reviews.

I really like both Mercenarieses much more than EDF: The guns aint pants, the characters aint pants, the vehicles aint pants, the music aint pants and the explosions aint pants.

EDF is a grotty half finished mess. Mercenaries is a grotty fully finished mess. If you enjoy sliding around EDFs world doing nothing with your weak guns more than driving about Merc's world and shooting and blowing stuff up a lot, I say you're broken, sir.

The Mercenaries games do have slight autoaimy-tracking though, but Mercenaries 2 only does it when you're holding LT to go into sights and I'm ACE enough not to need sights.

yeah, my experience yesterday;

me and a Peowwster in a tank taking out an outpost. a chopper comes in and starts blasting us, so I hide behind a tree whilst the other guy runs off. as soon as the chopper turns to follow him I grapplehook it, climb up and hijack the thing. I then land on the beach to pick him up and we fly to the next objective.

we anti-tank it up before getting blown out of the sky but have enough health to c4 up several gun towers whilst firing rockets at the cocks of various Venezualans. call in a bunker buster for good measure. screen goes orange, everything destroyed.

pure win.

I'm interested now after reading these reports but I give it about five weeks before it's available for £18, so I think I'll wait.

I know but I'm still going to wait and see what people think after a bit more play. I seem to remember having loads of fun for a while blowing stuff up on the first one then getting bored and never playing it again, so if it really doesn't offer much over that then I think I'll probably leave it.

MrD, I wouldn't call EDF's guns weak. Especially when you get the best versions.

My weak willed constitution seems to have driven me to a more remote Morrisons and forced me to buy this at gunpoint.

last time I played it I was getting weapons that started to be a risk on your own health, like the gun that shot out 20 grenades in one go.

I am Dimrill's weak-willed consitution. I get cancer, I kill Dimrill.

I never got any decent seeming guns in EDF. Nothing seemed to have a noticeable effect on anything. (A problem I think I'm having with Bioshock.)

I now insist that Myp goes to that massive Morrisons staffed by midgets near where he lives and buy this on the way home. Just for his failure to buy Army of Two.

I will do a MarkG on this. Quite happy with my £25 titty fighter for now. (Plus I already bought GH3 last week - £59.95 from ASDA fact fans).

Also: Sell your fringe Myps.
