Just tried to by 3X8 200mg of 12 hour Ibuprofen at Waitrose

I was told I could only but 2 as "Computer said no"

So I asked for the manager and he said it was the law and I could only buy 2 packets at ones. I then asked him how this helps anyone when they sold larger packets of 200mg tablets, so I could have left with 2 or 3 times as many pills. I get “it’s the law sir” in the usual polite but disinterested voice.

So I leave, but I think they are wrong, the NHS says the following..

“The highest strength of ibuprofen tablets that shops can sell is 200mg but pharmacies can sell tablets at 400mg strength”

Nothing on tablet limits and why should there be? Usually over doing of HSE and fucking nanny state. Waitrose wouldn’t bat an eye if I went through with 20 bottles of vodka.

The other thing the 'law' doesnt care about is you going through the tills buying 2 packets - then going back to the shelf and lifting another 2 and going back through the tills ....

usually you can only buy 32 *200 in one transaction, which is normally 2 packets of 16, maybe they are stuck on the 2 from that?

There was something I was listening to on the radio the other day, possibly More or Less, which seemed to show that since this came in suicides have reduced.

So, you know, good thing.

I heard that, they said pill based suicides had decreased, but they didn't know if other forms of suicide had increased.

Malc

I thought I heard somewhere that the number of successful pill based suicides had decreased, but the number of unsuccessful suicides doing lifelong internal organ damage (but not immediately terminal) had increased. Not recently though, so doubt I can back this up.

You'd have to be pretty unlucky to die from too many iBo's or pretty stupid to try. Not that I'll be recommending a suitable alternative suicide tablet.

But try snorting a box of Lemsip though if you've had enough of life.

Yup, it was introduced in an attempt to combat pill popping suicide attempts, and anecdotally it appears to work.

Bizarrely, you can walk into a pharmacy and buy a bottle of 100 over the counter no problems.

Pharmacists, being the highly trained professionals that they are (and not just the pill equivalent of a waiter, no really, we've got qualifications and a certificate and everything), are clearly better placed to spot a potentially suicidal person than a till attendant.

Pharmacists do have a lot of responsibility, it's their neck on the line for prescription, not the docs. They know much more about the drugs than the doctors do, in most cases, which isn't surprising if you think about it, but it's a lot more than just a waiter :D

Ask him which law. If he can't tell you, ask him specifically what the law states. If he can't tell you that, kick off.

If the doc prescribes the wrong drug, it's not the pharmacist's problem. All the pharmacist has to do is (a) make sure they match the name of the pills to the name of the drug on the prescription and (b) keep an eye out for issues with multiple prescriptions interfering with each other (which is a simple list-based process). And despite that it still take them 10 minutes to do it when you're the only customer.

Mrs K worked at the RPSGB for a bit, and she has a low opinion of them.

Still, noble work, and all that.

Why? They're entitled to refuse service of anything at all to anyone they like on any grounds they like other than "it's cos you're a man/woman/lesbian/ethnic minority".

Yes. The over the counter limit is on a certain mg and not number of boxes. They're possibly confused. (However I don't know the mg limit). Also, if you bought some, went back, and bought some more, they can still tell you to GTF if they recognise you.

As I'm now over 40 and a grumpy old man I called Waitrose customer service and asked them to clarify. They told me that the law says that you can buy 100 Ibuprofen at any one time, however Waitrose has its own policy (not law) that says its 2 packs of any size in one transaction. These packs can have any number of pills in them I guess not exceeding 50 per pack, so makes no sense really.

So not law as that tosser of a manager said, so I will be relishing my hollow victory today

Yeah, I think most shops have this policy as it keeps things simple at the till.

Is lying about conviction or facts? He might simply have been in error.

Either way: Go back and CORRECT HIM.
