That was an exciting women's 400M there, and a hard earned silver.

Only half hour or so until Bolt (most likely) wins.

Think how much better Bolt could be if his starts weren't so ropey. :DD

Ooooh, hold your horses there. There are a couple of academically and behaviorally very, very good comps near here, and a very good grammar school which I'd be happy sending them to - I'm not too worried about the academic education they'd get, more the additional opportunities, both in terms of sport and everything else, they'd get at private school.

That said, this isn't the thread for education discussion, so we'll leave that part of the discussion there, I think!

Well, if you'll at least permit me a brief response, chap. ;)

1. The term "good comprehensive" is relative, as I'm sure you well appreciate. Let's leave it there.

2. Grammars are, of course, selective schools. I'm all in favour of them as it goes.

3. "I'm not too worried about the academic education they'd get," pfft, pull the other one mate. Of course you're worried about that; you'd have to be a fool not to be, and you're no fool. In no way does this fundamental truth detract from wanting decent sports and extracurricular activities of course, or being prepared to pay for them.

You've possibly misunderstood - I mean "I'm not too worried about the academic education they'd get at the schools I was talking about", meaning I know they'd get a good one there.

Only in comparison to the 2nd-8th fastest sprinters in the world currently. He's such a big lad it's no surprise his starts are relatively poor.

You know the big cutaway overhead camera in the olympic stadium that the BBC always cuts to before listing the onscreen results for athletics events? Has anyone else noticed that a spider appears to have coccooned a fly right over the front of the lens, making it look like there's a massive wrapped fly monster in the middle of the olympic park? No, just me? Oh.

It was there all day yesterday. I'm amazed they can't get up there to remove it.

Is it possible that there really is a massive wrapped fly monster in the Olympic Park, and there's some sort of tacit agreement by everyone not to mention it?

Bloke arrested after he threw a bottle onto the track just before the 100m final. I was surprised people were allowed to bring bottles into the stands, after all the other restrictions in place.

This would explain why NBC are delaying all their coverage to primetime, so that they can give sufficient thanks to our new monster fly overlords, should the eventuality arise.

You can buy bottles of water and whatever there. Otherwise people would have to sit for hours in the stadium without any form of refreshment

You can buy beer, too, which is what was thrown. It's just expensive!

I think you're allowed them in the stands because I've seen people drinking on TV. The uproar was about the fact that you're not allowed to bring your own "branded" refreshments in because of sponsorship issues. Or more accurately, they want to nickel and dime you with £10 plastic bottles of beer.

(You're not allowed alcohol in the stands of the football games, but that's a result of our anti-hooliganism laws and not, as far as I know, anything to do with the Olympics.)

The 'given reason' is that it isn't branding that stops you taking in drinks, it is the airport style security for bags, and excluding liquids*. This of course has the effect of banning Pepsi anyway. You can take your own food in, so there isn't anything, technically, stopping you from carrying a BK whopper in. Other than the fact it is a long walk from Burger King and it would be pretty rank by the time you got to your seat. You can also take an empty plastic bottle in to fill with water, and again, an Pepsi bottle probably wouldn't cause issues, unless 10 of you all walked in at the same time with one.

*Said security is basic to say the least. We could have carried virtually anything in the bottom of the pushchair had we chosen to.

Aye. The restrictions on beer is the same as, say, a Premiership football match, or an International cricket match.

Jason Kenny was selected for Team GB to do the Sprint in the cycling ahead of Sir Chris Hoy. He just smashed it and won Gold.

That's his third Olympic Gold.

He's 24 years old.

*weeps for his own inadequacy*

Also, the BBC service during this Olympics is sodding incredible. I can sit here on the sofa as Onóra watches CBeebies and use my phone to stream any event taking place, live.

Outstanding

It's...decent. The sport-specific channels seem to have as much accidental dead air as they do commentary.

That's what baffled my colleague, which is where this tale came from. They were supposedly confiscating bottle tops on the way in, but you could happily buy complete bottles within the place itself. Maybe they were collecting them for school vouchers by force, or something. Or he was lying. Who knows.

After these Olympics, heads should roll at NBC. I'd go fucking apeshit if the BBC fucked up the way they have in the name of advertising. Last night they delayed showing the 100m until primetime, which was a spectacular own goal.

Worse still, just after the first African American ever to win a gymnastics medal, they cut to an advert of a monkey doing gymnastics. Well planned.

I went looking for a link of the 100m story then found the monkey one by mistake. Then failed to post either and now can't be fucked.

The steel toe caps of my boots set the alarms off. Rather than checking my boots, which could have contained knives and bombs and things, I was meerly felt up for a bit.

I used to have to do this at Manchester Academy. It's to stop them being used as projectiles at the bands. (A capped bottle is basically a dart/brick). Same reason I had to open beer cans before they passed over the bar.

That may be a football rule, come to think of it. You probably can't drink anything inside the boxing arena either (BBFC rules - presumably in case you throw liquid onto the canvas, which would end the fight)

LOLCOG are confiscating the bottle tops so they can install them on rooftops.

Yeah, but like Malabelm's chum said, you could buy sealed bottles inside the arena

Did you buy one, Grim...? In my experience, they remove the cap from those as well when they sell them to you.

As has been said, the reason they remove the tops is because a sealed bottle of liquid is a potentially more dangerous projectile than an unsealed one. The reasoning being that some liquid will escape from an unsealed bottle during flight, lightening the deadly projectile. Simple as that.

(Although as anyone with a basic understanding of physics will note, if you throw an open bottle of piss/lager with anything resembling non-spack-handedness, they're still pretty effective.)

I asked once at the Boro ground where they sell plastic bottles of pissy Carlsberg. They also do it with cans of lager at gigs - they won't give you one unopened. It either gets poured into a paper cup or the can is at the very least opened first and then handed over.

Google's doodle is interactive today. And may destroy whatever productivity is left in the workplace.

This 'inspire a generation' thing really is bollocks, isn't it? It's more 'Inspire the 7% of a generation who have rich parents'.

You missed off "to run a little quicker than someone else, rather than being a doctor or something".

Yeah, shush, we've won medals, gold medals. How can it not all be worthwhile? I mean billions upon billions of quid to keep flag wavers and sports fans happy for a fortnight is excellent value.

Actually I was really surprised to see the BBC running a fairly negative piece this morning stating basically that the notion that the Olympics do anything for tourism in either the short or long term is pretty much bollocks.

The BBC have done a pretty good job of the whole thing, reckon. They've had some technical issues, but mostly ~(in the evening when I see it) it's been fine.

I'm especially impressed with the commentators, who always do well with everyone's names (although the pronunciation might well be shit, who am I to know?).

The streets of London are definitely an example that it's bollocks in the short term. The pre-olympics scare stories about congestion and travel appear to be such that locals have either fled the country or are cowering in their homes avoiding the centre of London, and non-olympics tourism appears to be non-existant.

I can't comment on future tourism. I would have thought that the amount of countries showing the success of the games and touting the nation's capital across the globe would help tourism, but I certainly have no way of quantifying that.
