Food of the Gods, for sure.

But smoked, or unsmoked?

I've just been to a sandwich shop in town and asked for a chicken and bacon sandwich, and I found myself thinking that it would be nice to have the choice of smoked or unsmoked.

You've also missed "Both, but specific types for specific uses". I'd always have smoked in a club sandwich, for example, and unsmoked in a bacon sandwich.

mmmmm bacon

http://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/1659 ... ze-hits-US

Quote:
Burger King is the latest food chain to jump on the savoury dessert band wagon with the announcement of a 510-calorie bacon sundae.

Burger King announced a special summer menu that includes a 510-calorie bacon sundae perfected in one of the most obesity-stricken states in America.

"This limited-time soft serve dessert took Nashville, Tennessee by storm earlier this year and is now available nationwide to satisfy every sweet tooth," the fast-food chain said in a press release.

"The sweet and savory dessert features the rich and creamy vanilla BK soft serve (ice cream), drizzled with chocolate fudge, caramel and topped with bacon crumbles, complete with a thick-cut, hardwood smoked bacon garnish."

Its calorie count is within sight of Burger King's signature Whopper hamburger, which weighs in at 670 calories.

Tennessee has the fourth-highest obesity rate in the United States at 31.9 percent, according to a report last year by the Trust for America's Health think tank.

Last month an HBO television documentary cast a spotlight on local efforts in Nashville, the state capital and heart of the US country music industry, to reverse the trend.

The bacon sundae -- which has eight grams of fat and 61 grams of sugar -- is part of a one-off, barbecue-themed selection from Burger King that also includes such Southern favorites as pulled pork sandwiches, frozen lemonade and sweet potato fries.

We stayed in a B&B a while back that made it's own bacon. Pigs lived in a field out back, and they had their own smokehouse. It was good.

Morrisons have a salad bar in their stores, and on said bar is a container of "bacon bits" which you can use to add a bit of bacon flavour to your salad.

Annoyingly, they don't seem to sell the bacon bits separately.

Most supermarkets sell those, somewhere, often in the spice aisle. They're often suitable for vegetarians, being made from soy and synthetic flavouring

Always smoked, if possible, but if the shops have none, unsmoked will do.

How do you guys cook it? Oven cooked bacon is the best bacon.

Danielle microwaves bacon. It seems to be common in America. Only the really thin streaky American style stuff, mind -- I think British back bacon wouldn't be very nice like that.

Hey, there's no streaky/back option in the poll.

Streaky bacon only takes 2 minutes under the grill. There is no excuse.

No one else does it in the oven? Give it a try, it's the best way to get crispy bacon.

Stick it on an oven tray with tin foil on it. Takes about 10 minutes, depending on how thick the bacon is.

On the back of Turkey and chicken, yeah.

On it's own it would take far too long to do.

I went to a place called Meat in Glasgow for dinner the other night which people (i.e. Craster) might be interested in. It's your usual array of tasty meat-based dishes as the name would suggest, but their seriousness about meat extends even to the cocktail menu with such things as the 'meatojito' (pork-rib infused rum with mint, brown sugar, apple juice and a caramelised pork-rib garnish) and various bacon related drinks. Annoyingly their online menu only covers the food so I can't find the full list anywhere. I did turn up a picture of one though which I need to link to as it's too big to embed apparently:

Oh hello! There's a chain of bars down here we spend a fair bit of time in that does a bacon bourbon sour that's very close to that Suckling Sour.

To my eternal shame I didn't actually bother trying one of them (we were only in for a quick burger before the Mogwai gig) but I definitely fancy it. They do actually do a single type of veggie burger so I might be able to convince Mrs B to go in with me sometime and I can give one of them a shot. That's unless the single veggie option conflicts with her recent to desire to go full on sodding vegan.

this may appeal to some (Craster). Got an email from the Hawksmoor yesterday, their third burger is now (marketing spiel incoming):

From Monday 10th March there'll be a new Third Burger at Seven Dials – the Five Pork Burger. Working on the assumption that more is always better, we've topped a Tamworth pork patty with sausage meat stuffing and a couple of slices of smoked bacon. On the side there's sausage gravy for French-dipping and a couple of extra-long pork scratchings. To balance it all out we snuck in some Spring Greens which brings a little Sunday Roast into the mix and a dollop of homemade apple ketchup.

Sadly I can't commit to anything for certain until after my wife sees the doctor. But it sounds like a trip is required.

Though it's the Hawksmoor, so I'll probably cave and get a steak anyway.

Pay attention to the use-within on the bacon jam.

Definitely don't open it and leave it in the fridge for a couple of months before thinking "hm, this bacon butty needs more bacon".

it may have benefited the flavour, but it didnt benefit my bowels.
