Well not quite broken it but it did something very strange last night.

I was playing Motorstorm:Pacific Rift when after a race it just went black and the network and hdd lights went into thrash mode for a good 3 or 4 minutes. After it kept doing this and nothing happened I turned the bloody thing off.

When I turned it back on it would get to random parts of the loading screens and just hang, couldn't even press the PS button to retrieve the situation. Tried the old "cold reset" on it and still no joy. I then tried Resistance 2 and initially that loaded ok then I killed a big beastie and it hung when loading up the next level. Another warm reset later and it worked ok. Occasionally it would tell me on boot up it couldn't load the PS3 software and it may have to re-install from other media which gave me the minor willies.

Do you get a "disk read error" or somesuch on the PS3 that tells you the 10 year old the house has smeared his grubby fingers all over the surface of your disc or does it just go squirrely as above?

This something anyone else here has experienced and if so how can I fix what ails it?

Yes but that was in prison a long time ago. Otherwise no.

Percussive maintenance is the answer. Use a Birmingham screwdriver.

Does 'Get an Xbox 360' classify as help?

You'll I'll be lucky.

As an aside I tried googling before I asked on here and "Motorstorm PS3 hang" brought up one relevant result so I tried "Motorstorm PS3 crash" which brought 8 million reviews and previews telling me how ace the crashes were. Google needs some kind of context algorithm controlled by special monkeys. Get on to it Gaywood.

I'm on my 3rd one of those. Modern technology is rubbish - as Blur nearly said once.

Crikey. He's probably revered as some kind of god in Wales, then.

Try looking up "ps3 repair" or "PS3 modding" or something instead. It'll throw up some junk, but possibly also some reputable home repair/modding sites that'll include a list of errors and explanations of erratic behaviour.

Is this thread some sort of joke?

A similar thing has happened to mine, Trousers. Playing Uncharted before Xmas it went to an unrecoverable black screen a couple of times and I was forced to press the power button on the back of the console. Not sure why it happened or if anything is actually wrong.

I would bother googling with a specific game name. You'll still get a bunch of people blaming Dead Rising for killing their 360 since it was $POPULAR_GAME at the time the first launch units keeled over.

A friend pointed that out to be this morning. The maths only works if you assume every time you query google you get the EXCLUSIVE use of 1200 separate servers AND ignore that most of that power would be used anyway.

It seems unlikely.

Plus apparently survey guy makes money advising websites how to be greener.

apparently you can sign up with Playstation for some kinda 2 day turnaround warranty thing, i saw the flyer at a firends over xmas, it was in the box for LBP.

You pay £5 a month and can do it on a month by month basis.

dont know if this is any help. might be worht signhing up for one month, and being without your ps3 for a couple of days.

Erm, I seem to remember that the PS3 had a 'red ring of death' that corresponded to a certain error number (about 6 or 7 digits) that kept occurring when people's PS3 died. I'm only mentioning it, because thats got to be slightly more useful than most of the posts here.

I assume it has plenty of ventilation?

Oh and also, is it plugged into a surge protector? I remember something about the 360 shouldn't be connected to one, because of it's massive power usage sending things funny.

Apparently they ask you if it was when you ring up, and if you answer in the affirmative they say you have invalidated your warrenty.

That may well be apocraful, but still felt like spurting it out. All over the shop.

You could try formatting the PS3's hard drive, as maybe there's some kind of corruption heebie jeebies going on. If you've got a USB stick, I believe you can back up your actual saves onto that. As for formatting the drive, their should be an option to do it in the System Settings bit of the Settings menu in the XMB.

Yeah I saw that when I was digging about in the settings. May be an action of last resort if the problem persists.

Bit of a joke that console gaming is now almost as stupid as PC gaming with all the crashes, reboots, patches and reformatting.

It's up on my victorian shelving units (see other thread) with plenty of ventilation although it is next to a small speaker - could the magnet in that be causing me a problem with the HDD?

It's plugged into a crappy Belkin muti-socket with surge protection but I don't think the actual surge protection element of it is switched on - well so the non illuminated orange light tells me anyway.

It could do... but the speaker should be insulated (or whatever the term is) to prevent that sort of thing from occuring.

The PS3 is worse than the 360 for having PC-esque foibles with all the updating and that, but for the most part seems more reliable. I went through four 360's in the finish, but I've had the one and only PS3 for over a year now and the only mucking about I've had to do with it was when I replaced the 60GB hard drive with a 250GB one.

That was one of the lies they used to tell before acknowledging their console was a heap of badly engineered shit.

I'm afraid I can't help, Trousers - the closest I've come is having it freak out and corrupt the settings, giving me a BSOD and making me go through the initial configuration again. That web eh? Who knew browsing it was more intensive than 3D gaming!

I have just read the subtitle of the thread.

If it's less than a month of you buying it, would it be wise to take it back to the shop for some hot replacement action?

With the amount of Xboxes (and now PS3s it seems) that break, why has someone not come up with an online way to store all your data and saves and stuff for situations like this?

Because Sony or MS won't let them release it.

In any case, the Sony is a standard hard drive and can be backed up and there are "ways" to do so with the 360 too.

That's looking the most likely course of action seeing as when I tried it tonight Resistance was acting funny for a while as well.

Pain in the bloody arse though.

Yeah, I don't know why I didn't think of that - but within a month you should defintely take it back. What may make things less of a pain in the arse is that, provided you have a large enough USB memory stick or hard drive, you can perform a complete backup of your PS3's hard drive. When you restore the backup on your new PS3, it'll have all the settings, save games, etc of the previous PS3.

The problem has been explained already in here. Software. The problem with everything and anything these days.

As consoles basically mimic PC's to become bigger and more powerful (in the same way they did with arcade machines and won) they are going to suffer the same flaws.
