Whilst trying to avoid getting out of bed this morning, I had a thought which I felt I just had to consult the BeeX Hive Mind about.

British forces having been in Iraq since 2003, and in Afghanistan since late 2001. And yet despite considering myself to be well-informed about the news and stuff, I have very little clue about what's actually been happening in those places for the last few years and what, if any, military or political goals are trying to be achieved. Does anyone know of any good books or articles that provide a decent overview of what's been going on?

Is it peer-reviewed?
