Can't you just use a better quality camera in the first place?

I don't think you can get video cameras with the same resolution as still cameras. So however good the video camera, you can always find more detail using this cool method. It does more, too. The HDR thing while not obviously "wow" is actually really cool.

They should make video cameras with built in still cameras on the side, that would take a high quality still image every X seconds, and match it up with the video.

The Canon 5DmkII does 1080p video, and 25mp? stills. I don't think you can set it to fire off stills during the video shoot though.

12mp. Not DSLR standard, let alone digital back medium format.

Have you ever seen footage produced with RED cameras, Ace? It's bloody impressive. I saw footage of an Apache AH-64 flyby at some USAF base and you could make out every little detail on the helicopter.

They're bloody cheap as well for the quality of footage that you can seem to achieve with them.

I'm just being purely technical. This snazzy editing system would enhance detail even from one of those cameras, because digital still cameras have even more megapixels. So the answer may be to buy an expensive video camera to get a certain level of detail without extra work, but there's always the option of resolving more detail, re-editing, cropping, zooming when you have even more detail than that. Plus all the other stuff they are doing with depth mapping and HDR (12 bit video still isn't going to light up that library scene with the window unless you're running three or more sensors/processors in the camera itself).

So the point being, buying a better video camera doesn't do it.

You can, but it's too quick.
