My laptop lives once again after going kaputt yesterday...unfortunately this has meant a full reinstall and associated pain. My copy of Bullguard was coming to the end of the subscription period so the question for the collective is, what are the best (preferably free but it matters not) firewall and AV packages?

Avgfree and spybot for AV and anti-spyware. Presuming you have a router that has a hardware firewall so there's not a great deal of point having a software one as long as you have AV.

I still use AVG Free for antivirus as it does everything I need it to do. I just use my router's firewall.

I swapped a paid-for AVG (without firewall or browser plugins) for a free Avast! when I was prepping a laptop to lend indefinitely to a friend. The boot times and fan levels dropped right off while desktop responsiveness went up. I'd be doing the same for my other laptops but my license runs out in 2010-ish.

Avira Classic Free, and Windows Firewall for me. And the router's SPI firewall, too, natch.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. I got it for £6.99 on Fleabay.
For anti malware I use Asquared and Malwarebytes Antimalware both of which are free as on demand scanners.

Absolutely nothing on my home PC behind a router.
At work where I'm obliged, Nod32.
