And Bob Spiers as well. Famous for his directing work on loads of comedy series but cut his teeth on The Goodies from 1977 to 1981.

One of the best voices in the world has passed away. Loved Ivor, Noggin and Bagpuss. RIP Postgate.

Some thing are too serious for jokes.

"Can we fix it? Can we fix it?"
"Not this time you can't."

Bagpuss scared me absolutely shitless when I was a wean. Couldn't exactly tell you why, I just felt there was something unbelievably sinister about the whole setup - Professer Yaffle, the mice, that bloody Deliverance toad with the banjo, the lot.

The witch off Chorlton And The Wheelies was scarier, though.

Chorton was far more terrifying. Don't get me started on Willo The Wisp (which still disturbs me to this day).

I've watched an episode of Bagpuss as tribute to Mr Postgate today. A total delight.

The closing narration is a bit poignant now.

Quote:
And when Bagpuss was asleep,
All his friends were asleep.
The mice were ornaments on the mouse organ.
Gabriel and Madeleine were just dolls.
Professor Yaffle was just an old wooden bookend in the shape of a woodpecker.
Even Bagpuss himself, once he was asleep, was just an old, saggy cloth cat,
Baggy, and a bit loose at the seams,
But Emily loved him

That's really sad news. I loved Oliver Postgate stuff as a child as it always had a homemade charm about it.

Oh jesus fuck, yes. Brrrr.

That and the little girl/boy thing from the Moomins with the straw hair were the stuff of my childhood nightmares.

I agree with Zardoz. By Willo the Wisp I assume you're talking about Evil Edna, yes? A walking TV right? She was outwardly evil. It's even in her name. The three fine examples from Zardoz tried to be your friend, but would wait until you were asleep before sucking out 1/2 a pint of blood. You'd become weak and fevered and wouldn't know why, while their puppet faces bloated with your life juice.

Never mind all the things that scared us, this thread should be a tribute to the might Oliver Postgate.

Rarely have I felt so sad at the news of someone dying when they aren't a relative.

All commissioning editors need to read this:
http://www.oliverpostgate.co.uk/archive1.html

Take note of the bit at the bottom. Anyone reckon that the "unspecified material" would have been an anti BBC rant? At least Postgate realised what their game was.
