I read NGamer now and again, but not all the time, and recently wrote for the mag for the first time. However, I only just got my remittance advice from Future to see which mag the thing I wrote was in. So, are there any NGamer readers here who would be willing to scan in a page or two for me? According to my pay, the Kirby Super Star Ultra review I wrote was in #30. (Alternatively, if that's the current issue with the Raving Rabbid on the front, and my review's in there, just let me know, and I'll pick up a copy in town.)

Presumably this is just so you have a copy of everything you've written rather than any dispute?

EDIT : According to the guy bitching about the low score you gave on the forum, it's in "the Latest issue" as of 8/11. Since it's the issue 30 thread I assume it's that.

EDIT 2 : The thread implies the new issue (#31) is out, like, now. So it's probably the rabbids one but get there quick. If it helps it comes with a shitty "Tin" as a "Free" gift.

It's so he can see if the braindead subeds have removed a comma and ruined his closing sentence.

Absolutely. I've been paid, and Nick (Ellis) seems a perfectly nice guy. However, he never got back to me regarding which issue the review would be in, and while I like NGamer, I didn't fancy continually buying issues just to see my review. (I maybe buy it three or four times per year, but not three or four times in a row.)

If the review's in the current issue with the Rabbid, I'll buy it, but if it isn't, it'd be lovely to see it. And, no, I'm not HULK SMASH when it comes to subs at the worst of times (bear in mind I didn't even grump in an official capacity about Total PC Gaming's 'Commador 64' heading), and NGamer's got pretty good subs.

I think you're safe that it's in 30 and 30 was sent out to subs on the 30/10 according to the forum so it's almost certainly the Rabbids one.

Rockin'. Does anyone have this issue? Can anyone check sometime over the weekend?

EDIT: Never mind. There's some A-Z list on the C&VG forum that lists it under #30, so I'll see if WHSmith in town has any copies lurking tomorrow.

I can confirm that your review is in issue 30. Better run fast, because issue 31 is out next Thursday.

Incidentially, Mimi's lovely DS cases get another plug in the upcoming issue.

Craig—thanks for uploading that. I had a look and read before I had to leg it for nightmarish afternoon shopping and—hurrah!—not many subbing issues and they used the wee guy from G&W (if not the Parachute one I sent) for my icon.

I did get an issue in Tesco, finally, hatefully bagged with last month's ONM, for 'only' £6, which is 'only' £1.01 more than NGamer usually costs. Still, it's a business write-off, so I'm not all HULK SMASH.

Funny to see the bitching about Kirby. I've nothing against the character at all—it's just that a game you can get through as quick as this one shouldn't be scoring terribly highly. I only gave it 68% because it's a lot of fun—just very short-lived fun.

See, for my six quid, I didn't even get a tin. I got a 'Wii Reviews Bible' and a set of Mario Kart magnetic bookmarks (which presumably came with ONM, whose review scores are... interestingly high).

Aw :( Sure nobody nabbed the tin from the plastic bag?

You could have stuck the magnetic bookmarks to the tin. It would've been a pointless ex cercise, but ho-hum. :D

The big "free" gifts are often removed from the double pack versions.

As opposed to Future's overpriced official Nintendo mag.

On the plus side, it's actually worth reading, unlike almost every other gaming mag out there. The times I've bought NG it's actually felt worth the money, and I love all the little nook-and-cranny footnote stuff. I could have done without paying an extra quid for ONM today, but beggars can't be choosers.

Yeah I'm a big fan of footnotes for humour purposes :)

But no, at £5 I don't buy it. £4 without insulting me with "Free" shit and we'd talk, which is more than I'd pay for anything else (I get RG for £2.50 being an old, old subber)

Ideally it wouldn't be £5 an issue, I agree. Does get read much quicker compared to, say, Retro Gamer (without the re-readability too) but I can live with that. It's a genuinely good publication. I just wish the magazine was bursting with content like it was during the Greener era, it's gotten rather thin lately.

I subbed to RG after I bought Issue 1. It's only the second magazine I've ever bothered to get a sub for. That and GamesTM cover my needs nicely, really. I used to sub to PCFormat before it went all shit. I've bought a few issues of NGamer but to be honest I don't use the Wii or DS enough to warrant having separate magazine.

In fact the only single-format magazines I really bothered with were Amiga magazines, and even then they covered multiple machines.

Do you people prefer single format magazines then?

Depends.

Super Play I really liked, and that was single format (Super NES, apart from the two issues which had Game Boy reviews). Lots of enthusiasm for the Super NES and lots of inside space for obscure Japanese games and features on Japanese culture.

Amiga Power... Awesomeness. Although looking back, being single-format was the worst thing about it, arguably.

The great thing about AP and SP is that they never claimed that 'their' format was the best available. Hated Amiga Format for example being so rabid. Most of the juvenile console magazines were like that too. Also, a big downside for single-format magazines is that they are never realistic about the prospects format they support. Multi-format magazines can at least move on.

Did buy Verge Edge for the first three, almost four years. Didn't own most of the formats it covered, but enjoyed particularly the early days with its fixation on "the future". Only really bought it in spurts, around launches for consoles intended to buy, later on. I couldn't justify, and still can't, buying a magazine when most of the games covered are for formats I don't own.

Also liked the vaguely-proto-Edge ACE. During the Future days. I liked seeing what games looked like on the exotic 16-bit machines I hoped one day to own. (Found the February 1989 issue the other day, incidentally. Suprisingly mint for a nearly two decade old magazine.)

NGamer... Well, I own the DS and Wii and nothing else, so it helps to have a magazine filled with content about them.

There's not a single modern multiformat magazine that isn't hateful. I stopped buying Games(TM) when it increased its price by 15% and turned into MiniEdge.

I buy 360 and RG.

I just prefer magazines with decent, entertaining writing. Of the gaming mags I've read over the past couple of years, that's pretty much Retro Gamer, NGamer and, well, nothing else. I agree with Duds about NGamer's 'extras', though—it'd be nice to see the bag and shit gone, and a quid lopped off the price. That said, knowing the way the market works in that sector, if NGamer did that, it'd be dead within a quarter. (See also why Total PC Gaming added a bag, loads of crap, and upped its price-tag.)

Am I allowed to borrow the BeEx pedant hat for a moment?

Ta.

[pedant hat] NGamer is, of course, not a single format magazine, covering both DS and Wii, and, on occasion, past Nintendo consoles. [/pedant hat]

That hat smells funny.

Does Dudley have his own hat then?

Yes, but only because it won't come off.

Dudley has a Pedant Head, like Worzel Gummidge. He's lost all his other ones, though.

Then again N-Rev added that shit..... and was dead within a quarter.

Although wasn't the general consensus that N-Rev was rubbish by that point anyway? When you're at the 'kill or cure' stage, the former of those things is way more likely in publishing anyway. You risk screwing over your core readership in a last-ditch attempt to appeal to the masses.

Interestingly, the TPCG revamp appears to have had the opposite effect—by turning it into MMO monthly, replacing Stu with an MMO column, knifing the retro content almost entirely (despite the editor arguing otherwise, although astute readers have probably noticed by now that the supposed 'extended' retro coverage is culled from old issues of Retro Gamer), adding loads of 'free' shit (although the cover price was ramped up to pay for that), sales have gone up. Quite a lot, in fact.

I'd be willing to put a fucking huge wager on NGamer being dead within four months if it ever ended up on the shelves like Retro Gamer (i.e. just a plain vanilla mag with no added shit). Hell, bear in mind that even now, 40 issues into Imagine's Retro Gamer run, there are still people moaning that the magazine doesn't have a fucking covermount. (Never mind that, against the odds, it's maintained its price point for over three years now, and is a quid cheaper than it was under Live.)
