I've just downloaded the first half of Excalibur (1981) which I recall watching countless times (on VHS) when I was 8 or 9, but I haven't seen it since.

I'm reminded of what a truly amazing film this is. Nicol Williamson as Merlin really makes it, as well as tidy appearances from Patrick Stewart. To my mind it's the ultimate depiction of the whole King Authur fable. Also, there is a small amount of boobage early on, which naturally appealed to me as a perverted little kid.

Are there any other such films that I've missed out on? Like I bemoaned the other day, I think the recent offerings in the last few years haven't been up to much.

Hmm - I'm not exactly sure what it is you're asking for, but I remember The Flight Of Dragons from my childhood as being a really good (animated) fantasy film.

Everyone should watch The Fountain.

If you don't like it you're doing it wrong and/or broken.

I also recently watched "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" and really enjoyed it. It's a bit on the long side, but really good.

I was really disappointed with The Fountain, IMO, not nearly as good as Pi and Requiem for a Dream.

I saw the new Harmony Korine film, 'Mister Lonely', the other night and it was excellent, especially the fantastic role played by Werner Herzog (who is a God amongst men in my book).

I presume you know of The Thing.. but do you know of the rather excellent Dark Star?

My personal favourite obscurity would probably be Liquid Sky. But it's a bit of an acquired taste.

As this youtube video should probably show:

Though I must point out that it got two thumbs down from Siskel and Ebert because it wasn't funny.

Liquid Sky is an amazing, yet utterly bonkers film with an incredible soundtrack. I sampled huge chunks out of the dialogue for the Higher Council of Mars album I collaborated on last summer. Drugs, Aliens, Sex and Dead Bodies, its got it all.

If we are talking films of old that CG should check out, then via bit torrent (because the cunts at Warner are incapable of releasing the fucking thing on DVD) you MUST see Ken Russell's The Devils which is just so incredibly amazing in every conceivable way, it is a FUCKING CRIME it isn't commercially available!

Also, for fantasy things, I think The Company of Wolves might tickle your pickle.

Movies you should see is a quality podcast, although they go into such depth with each film you probably don't want to listen to it if you do plan to see the film one day.
The Ferris Bueller one, where they were talking about Van Damme (they go way off topic) was one on the funniest things I've heard for ages.

Cinemageddon is an excellent place for obscure films. I've uploaded lots to there myself.

Of ones I've uploaded Radioactive Dreams seems rather popular.

Personal favourites have included Palais Royale (gangsters in Canada in the 50s..) and Lady In Red (more gangsters but in the 30s)

That's OK, it just means you are a bad person. :p

Although Pi and Requiem are both great too. :luv:

I have to give 'mad propz' to Brazil too, damn good film (although dear god get the original version, not the alternate ending)

Pretty much anything by The Coen brothers is good. The Hudsucker proxy and O Brother, Where Art Thou? being two of my favourites of theirs.

In the Company of Men is a gloriously horrific tale of misogyny, selfishness, being a prick and manipulation. Watch it, but only once.

No no, get both! The 3-disc Criterion box is awesome for this; watching the TV version with the commentary is like being given a film school lesson in how to butcher a film or summat.

I was a little disappointed with this film. It was decent, but I was hoping for better.

Films I would recommend include:

The Princess Bride
O! Brother, Where Art Thou?
Dobermann
Aliens
Dodgeball
Brick

I need to watch this. I've seen, for boring reasons, the first half. I read a great review once; it pointed out that, you know how with some films, there is a creeping sense of dread that you can't put your finger on? That from the very beginning, without really knowing how you know, you are certain this ends badly? Well, by changing the title from Oil! to There Will Be Blood, Anderson manages to start creating that mood before you even sit down to watch the film.

Oil! suggests some sort of 1950's technicolor musical about rugged Texas roughnecks and prim southern dames and lots of swirling and dancing. Which sounds just fabulous, but it's a touch different from the actual film.

Old films.

The Manchurian Candidate (not the crap remake from a few years ago)
Charley Varrick
Point Blank
Get Carter
Brotherhood of the Wolf (but watch it in French - the dubbing is atrocious)
Miller's Crossing
Once Upon A Time in America
Freebie and the Bean
Diva

There will be blood should have won the oscar imo. I'm a big Coen Brothers fan, but "no country for old man" is nowhere good as that. Daniel Day Lewis had the most amazing acting performance that i ever seen, and i see about 3/4 movies every week. I do agree with you on the overall atmosphere of the film, Anderson couldn't have done any better.

I think it's the exclamation mark. It's over used in musicals. Oliver! Oklahoma! and other examples that I can't think of.

Chitty! Chitty! Bang! Bang! That make's it sound like porn. In fact if you changed the C's.... I'm sure someone has already thought of that before me. :spew:

I realise you're not around at the moment Grim..., but thanks a lot for the recommendation. I've just been listening to the Top Gun podcast and it's bloody hilarious.

just watched wall-e on blu-ray, so glad i waited instead of downloading a dodgy copy. what a charming film. i was enthralled from start to finish. my first dissertation was on non-human characters displaying human emotions without speech... i wish wall-e had been around then!
