Right. It's that time of year when we all have lots of spare time (ha), and the ideal way of filling up those long winter evenings (presuming that Zooey Deschanel can't make it over for tea) is with a BeeX Challenge!

This month's challenge (because if this goes well there may be more) is to hie thyself along to your nearest army surplus store. They aren't all quite like that shop in Falling Down (mainly as we're not allowed to buy guns - phooey), but they are admittedly often a little odd and run by bizarre middle aged men who know far more about the sort of buttons used on 1940s officers' jackets than any normal human being should be able to retain.

Once you have found your nearest army surplus store, and plucked up the courage to open the door, the Challenge Part 1 is to obtain an item of ex-army/navy/air force accoutrement which is about as inappropriate for you as possible. Or is COMPLETELY AWESOMES, depending on your point of view.

Challenge Part 2 is to take a photo of yourself wearing said item of attire in a crowded place.

Special Challenge Points will be awarded to anyone who gets a photo of themself wearing their militaria with an actual member of the Armed Forces. Holding hands is optional.

If thre isn't an arm surplus near you, anything similar will do.

Go!

Closing date is... ooh, three weeks' time. There will then be a poll. There may be a prize.

Unless there's fuck all interest in this, in which case I'll buy myself something to cheer me up. :)

Man, the nearest Army Surplus Store to my office is MILES away. Maybe I can get one of those fake Beefeater outfits they sell to tourists and stand next to a real Beefeater, as I'm not that far from the Tower of London.

I have a huge selection of accoutrements obtained from my nearest army surplus store, from when I used to indulge in a spot of airsofting.

Unfortunately it never seems to look inappropriate on me. For example:

I may be persuaded to wear that outfit (sans MP5, obv.) in a crowded place ;)

//edit: Shin, there's an army surplus store in the Market Hall.

For "inappropriate", then, read "inappropriate or TEH AWESOMES".

If I get caught in Confederate uniform I'll probably be shot.

(Am very tempted to wear my fab union greatcoat around Oxford though)

That's the look I was going for.

I could win this easily by plugging in my external drive and rooting through my pictures to find a shot of me with the Army bods from Bad Lads Army - I did all the stills for both series and I'm sitting here in a pair of Combat 98 army pants as I write this, which were given to me by a commando!

When I was a boy scout, the troop leader decided that we should have some Sea Scouts, of which I was one. The idea never really went anywhere, and there were a total of two of us ever. I had to wear one of these:

Didn't realise CG had branched out into army surplus:

http://www.atthefront.com/rants.htm
Quote:
We WERE nicer for years. But eventually we came to spending about 70% of our phone time with meatheads who wanted to shoot the shit, were lonely, wanted some "army stuff", or wanted to babble for hours about their uncle Bud who was building a Panther Ausf. G from beer cans. The latest imbecile (Monday) was upset because he put his helmet in the microwave to bake the paint...and bad things happened. I'm not making this up. (That's one reason we don't give directions on painting helmets. Misinterpretations and fires...it sounds like a joke, but it's not.)
The terse language has reduced the idiot phone calls (and by extension increased our efficiency of filling orders) by a large percentage. Our job is to provide the best stuff possible as efficiently as possible. It would be nice if we had time to be a comfort line for the lonely, a historical reference and restoration info hotline and a depressed re-enactor counseling center

Yes, because the distinction between 'orders' and 'quiz questions' is very fine.

There goes the stripping industry then.

Someone said that to me, the other month when I was wearing my RAF coat. I laughed at him.

I think there's a serious misunderstanding of the law here (it smacks of sad miserable git calling Ofcom - as if we care), but I'm buggered if I know where to start. And I don't think the council's censorware would let me access ARRSE.

Also - filthy tab wearing corporal's stripes? Ha!

Ha!

One would assume (and hope) that the actual offence would be to say "Hello, I'm Group Captain MaliA" to someone and then carry on the charade having both actors behaving as they would if such a relationship were genuine.

But I doubt that this is the case. i would look, but I've got OAPA to cock about with today.
