Not a good week to be a TV legend. First legendary TV weatherman Jack Scott pops his clogs, now the first man in the world to use a cash machine* dies:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7732403.stm

Reg also appeared in On The Busses.

* Cash machines had existed before, but Reg was the first man in the world to make a withdrawl using a "voucher" based system, in effect what we do today with our bank cards.

And just to prove I'm not bullshitting about Reg and the cash machine:

when I read the post title, I thought it was a warning, like "the next man to use a cash machine WILL DIE!"

I thought it was 'first man to die from using a cash machine'.

On The Buses ftw

I love the fact that rather than choose a top international movie star for such a momentous history making event as using the first ATM, they selected Reg. So forever more articles like the one on wiki will carry a picture of Reg wearing a flat cap and grinning towards the camera. It's that kind of thing that just defines our country.

Reg Varney, one of the many Brit comedy actors who outstay their welcome, have several mediocre to terrible film turns, and coincidently have that squinty eyed sweaty-sleezey look that has become to be known as 'Gervaising of the face.'

Anyway, he had a good innings.

:this:

The story hasn't grabbed my interest as much as that would have.

I had this image in my head of this poor dude going up and popping his car in and then it flying back out at him and killing him via servering an artery...

Just me? Oooookay

Anyway- RIP, sir

Here's one for the album covers:

And Reg using the first cash machine:

Can't say he overstayed his welcome really as I don't think anyone has seen or heard much from him for donkeys years. By the looks of IMDB he pretty much bowed out of full time acting in the late 70's. Unlike Norman Wisdom who spent 40 over 50 years milking a one trick comedy character he played in the 50's. Only dementia succeeded where everyone else had failed to get him off our screens forever.

At times he reminds me very much of David Jason. Or is it the other way around?

Funnily enough, I once imagined a remake of On The Buses starring Gervais as Stan and Merchant as Jack.

I do have a soft spot for On The Buses even though it's sexist, unfunny shit if you look at it objectively.

RIP Varney.

But this was when the UK was far more parochial that it is now. Also, bear in mind, OTB was MASSIVE making Varney a sizeable star by any metric. Wasn't Ronnie Corbett or someone similar to first person to make a mobile phone call in the UK?

I met Stephen Lewis when I was a kid. My paternal Aunt and Uncle used to be the bar managers at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff and they used to let some actors stay with them when they were playing there. I didn't recognise him at all (he played Blakey to save you having to look him up)

IIRC the cash machine thing was done approx 3 years before On The Busses launched.

i wish the UK was still parochial. All that glass and chrome? All I want is a pint o bitter, a flat cap, a comfy cardigan, a nice warm chair and laptop connected wirelessly to a super fast high-tech communications network. So, parochial is good up to point.

and for extra points, you can collect floppy disks and joysticks along the way

I used to have the "On the Buses" board game. It wasn't very good, but it did have a little plastic Blakey counter who you had to avoid when up to your hilarious japes.

Reg Varney fact - Reg Varney is rhyming slang for 'Pakistani'.
Rest in peace Reg, even if on the buses is embarrassingly bad.

My 7 year old was reading one of my beer cans the other day, and pronounced lager as "lag her" when I corrected him to "larg er" he said: "I thought it would be like bath/path where you can pronounce it either way.

I therefor submit that as lager can only be pronounced as larg er, that all words like bath can only be pronounced "barth"

I've just remembered there's a local band in Bournemouth called Reg Varney. I can't remember if they're any good, though.

Probably not.

-edit-

Ah, here they are.
