The nice people at Cyberpower set up vista for me before sending the machine out - not what I needed but there you go.

Problem is, I've created my own account, administrator level, under my own name. This is fine. I only want one account on there but one exists called administrator, which as you can imagine is an administrator account as well. It is pointless. It must go. I just want the account under my name, and the guest account. BGut I can't delete it, there's no option where the walkthroughs tell me there ought to be. What do I do to get rid of this thing?

Open a DOS box (the command prompt) and type

net user administrator /active:no

apparently. I don't run Vista so I can't test it.

And I just checked in XP x64 and the Users panel in the Admin Tools lets you disable or delete the Administrator account at will.

Oh ffs. They've fucking put my files directory as c:/user/Michael.

NO ONE EVER FUCKING CALLS ME MICHAEL.

What the fuck are they playing at?

I can't change that to Mike, either. I'VE JUST GOT THE FUCKING THING :(

Why can't you change it? Frankly I don't know Vista's UI, but in XP you'd do Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Local Users and Groups > Users > Right click Michael rename Mike.

CUNT.

I've deleted the account 'mike' and asked for all my files to be dropped into a folder on my desktop named 'Mike'

It put them in one named 'Michael'.

CUNT.

Oh well, just delete said folder.

I FUCKING CAN'T.

Error: "You need permission to perform this action"

I AM THE FUCKING ADMINISTRATOR. FUCK OFF.

How come the word Michael is embedded in everything in this fucking os and I can't remove it?

I've a good mind to send the thing back. I fucking hate Michael being used like that. Fucking hate it. Twats.

That's not there in Windows Vista: Michael Edition.

Ok, go to Run and pop in "control userpasswords2" without the quotes. Double click any account to edit it.

Would you believe turning it off and on again made the problems go away?

And there was me worried they'd fundementally changed Vista somehow! Mercifully still the same illogical nonsense trying to get things done. Oh, how I've missed thee!

As for renaming the folders, it's possible but you're far better off creating a new account in the name you want and deleting the old one. It's a right pain the arse making programs aware that their files are now somewhere else.

No programs to do that with, yet. Just need to rebuild my media player library and I'm all set.

Ooops, forgot to mention - regardless of which accounts are on there, or I am trying to use, Vista boots then I immediately get a 'username or password not valid' error with a try again button, which takes me to the actual account(s) I've got.

How come there's some sort of attempt to log on before I log on? I'll eventually ask the people who put this thing together, but I'm waiting until I'm calmer to do that bit.

Vista can be a bit of a pain at time, but it really does look like the chaps at Cyberpower have dicked around in a bad way before sending it out to you.

Are you sure they just didn't mishear you when you said you wanted it to be called 'My Cool PC'?

Somebody else having fun with Vista? This doesn't bode well for when I'm finally forced into upgrading.. I hate messing around with stuff that I don't understand.

I've found both Vista PCs to be no problem at all, and wouldn't really want to return to XP.

Can't help but feel it's flaws have been overstated, there was a huge downer on it even before it was released.

Everything seems to be going right now, log-on included. Odd.

That said, this is the first hiccup I've had with Vista, my last machine was Vista as well, and everything 'just worked' all the time - a massive improvement over XP, regarless of what I plugged into a USB port, for example.

Don't be put off Vista, but I've a machine that'd thunder along under Vista 64 and I've put 32 on there for compatibility with existing software and peripherals. Still goes like a rocket, and Windows 7 in <> 18 months will be 64 bit for me, with a much smaller footprint on the system for l33t performance... apparently Win7 pre-beta sits ncely on an Eee901... so should be an improvement all round. If you can keep your current system for a year and a half or so, I'd do it.

Yeah, I'm happy with Vista, in fact happier than I was with XP. Does sound like a wrongly setup system you've got there.

I have Vista, and like it. Only issue I have with it is taking a while longer than XP to be fully running when switched on, and the very first browser after turning on takes ages to appear and then 'connect' but after that everything is peachy.
