If you hate Elite, i've probably already fucked your wife in the ass, just to show you how lame you are. Elite is the best game, and It should be available in any shape and size you like these days, but someone won't let us play.

Mercifully there's Oolite, Mac-originated, modular and mercifully resplendant in its role as the de facto sucessor to the original in terms of open-source, community-based love. But it ain't a cinch to get going, this new mahcine I've jsut got is a decent gaming rig ad runs it fine under vista, but an adapted openGL elite is too much for my 1.4 Atllon with FX5600 card, my Eee901 under Xandros, my 2.2 Turion vista laptop with intel gfx and just about everyhting else I've tried it on.

Installed it yesterday, and I love it. Alas, I can't redefine the keys. You have to enter a value for each key and I'm not sure which to enter, and unsure over exactly what to google for. Any clues? The current controls use the cursor keys for steering. Cursor keys are no good for games, never will be. Wrong place, wrong shape.

But which packs to download? And how do I do that?

Any players on here?

I tried oolite a few months back, but it kept crashing and being a pain in the hole. Also, the total lack of any sort of autopilot or time dilation is silly, and the attempt at justifying it on the website is pathetic. OMG ELITE PREDATES 'TWICTH' GAMING YOU HAVE ADHD BLOODY KIDS HOW DARE YOU YOU NEED INSTANT GRATIFICTION WE ARE SUPERIOR LIKE ALL OLD GAMES.

Er, no mate. The term 'twitch gaming' is new, but the idea that there were no games based on reflexes and speed before elite is hilariously wrong. And simulation or not, forcing the player to sit there for fully thirty minutes doing literally nothing every single time they want to dock (which could be most of the game even with time dilation or autopilot) is bloody horrible, stupid design. Stick autopilot in, and the ultranerds with nothing better can do can disable it if they must. Honestly.

Cor, GLFrontier is nice.

Need to brush up on my key commands though. And get used to the physics.

Anyone know how to scale it up a bit? I've got a 22" monitor here...

/me digs about in the files

I never thought I'd forget the controls to Frontier but I've managed it. Quick list of the controls.

Oooh, I wish I could play Frontier still.

If anyone has a version on UAE that works on the Mac and could zip it up and give it to me I would love them forever. I've never managed to get it to work.

I still have my A1200 and my big box of Frontier stuff (The manual and story book were awesome) but I keep them at my parents.

I thought Elite had autopilot, you just had to buy it?

Oolite is being roundly ignored, because I just want to mpa the controls to proper ELite controls, and it is not as if I even have to open a file and edit which key does what, I need to find out what the addresses are for said keys each, and fuck about wiht all that... and the file is harldy in an easy to read format.

Don't they want people to play their game and enjoy it? Just have a key redefine thing in there, like games had thirty fucking years ago.

Of course they do. But only as long as EVERYONE PLAYS IT IN THE CORRECT, OFFICIAL MANNER.

I don't know about Elite, but Oolite didn't appear to have one, and when I checked on the website (which is now down, annoyingly), they said there was nothing of the sort, and scoffed at anyone who had a reason for wanting one. Like having a life. I'd have tried playing it until one became available (if it ever did), but that'd involved doing literally nothing for several hundred hours, and I can do that already without needing to switch the pc on.
