I have rock band for the Xbox. Can I plug the same mic into my PS3 for Singstar "fun"?

doubt they would work, but the ps2 ones do so if you could find some cheap ones of them it could be good for you.

From what I can glean, no; you have to use a SingStar-branded mic. Shame, as any USB mic will work with Rock Band(I've been using an Audio Technica AT2020, just because it looks cool).

Definitely doesn't work; game moans that "the SingStar USB adaptor is not plugged in" when you try to select a song.
