I need a new laptop for carting to uni, work and home. It needs to be small, quite cheap and capable of running Source based games as my R&D project is all about the Source SDK.

I was looking at a higher-end EEEPC or the aspire one. Any suggestions?

Ok chaps, I've altered my needs a little. Anyone got a netbook that they can comment on gaming performance?

Bugger it, I'm going to buy the Aspire One 1gb Linux and put XP on it. With a bit of hacking, HL2 runs at about 25fps. More than enough for what I'm doing. Go me!

Hahaha :)
Most laptops will run source-based games, but probably not very well.

These may or may not help:
this and this

I've got an Acer Aspire One that I've upgraded to 1.5 gig, but I'm still running the standard os, which probably won't lend itself too well to playing any old windows games.
It seems to run ScummVM ok though, but I haven't got round to testing much else on it.

Great link. Although it does say that HL2 is 'totally unplayable'. I don't need screaming fast graphics and twitch gaming for my needs. It's 200 squid FFS!

That's nothing to do with the hardware, it's just that HL2 is totally unplayable.

On further inspection, I may stump up the extra for the MSI Wind. Bigger screen and easier memory upgrade, both nice features. The wife's getting her Aspire One for her b'day tomorrow anyway, so we'll see how it copes with day to day stuff (I may sneak a few games on to it as well)

Let me know how she gets on, the wife wants one so she does not have to use the PC when the little one arrives!!

Wife opened the Aspire One on Thursday, was suitably impressed. I bought the Linux Version to save a few squid and dumped XP sp3 on there. It works a charm and the wife loves it. Havent had chance to give the GMA 950 a thrash yet. I am now almost totally decided on buying a MSI Wind or possibly a Samsung NC10, but it'll have to wait til after payday now anyway. I believe there's a toshiba netbook due also and I am a fan of Tosh products for some reason.
