So we have a Pro-Achievement whoring thread and a Pro-Achievements are poo thread.

But which is best?
Attachment:
HarryHill_fight.jpg

Personally, I think achievements are a great tool in getting me to try things I wouldn't otherwise., but they are massively undermined by each list being padded out by busywork and grind the vast majority of the time. Still something like Omega 5's achievements added to my enjoyment a great deal, but all the games that have 'win 50 games' 'drive 500 miles' are bags of wanks. I think the PS3s trophies are actually a better system as they promote the thing that gets the trophy being worth it on it's own rather than getting the ocd 1000/1000 numner.

So why not try filling out the poll? I'm quite interested in what the difference between the highest and 2nd highest will be. The better achievements are found by the forum the smaller the shift should be between the two. Well that and the effect of more generous games.

Personally my best every achievement score is 670 from BioShock then 530 from assassins creed. 2 games that give you a lot of points for just doing the story. It would never occur to me to get the rest. I've played the games, and enjoyed them. If I was to play the games again, I would start over re-eating the steak, rather than pick around the left over side salad.

Achievements with no imagination are crap. See 3D ultra minigolf's "host 3 games on Live".

Achievements that make you play a game differently are awesomes. See Hitman : Blood Money's silent assassin ones.

For me I enjoy maxing a game out and ticking it off the list. Could not give a shite how high or low my total is. Not to say that I never play games again that I've maxed, as both Assassin's Creed and Hitman have had furious workouts after the magical 1000 was reached. Not to mention awesome Crackdown.

My top game would appear to be PES6, where I have 470 points.
In second place... PES 2008, with 390 points.
(hilariously, FIFA09 is 3rd with 285 points, apparently, I like my football games)

Hitman seems a perfect game for achievements actually. I've been meaning to get that at some point.

Oh and to clarify if you've managed to get 1000 points twice then it's your first highest and 2nd highest. I wonder what the highest difference between the two is...

EDIT: Sorry Joans, realised had to reset the poll to add 1000 points in. Whoops!

Top is TDU at 1000. Which, with the drive all roads achievement probably got more running than it would without. I have nothing else over 700 (PGR4 and Full Auto being the standouts) but I suspect I'll hit 1000 on CSI by the end of the week.

I wouldn't buy a game for achievements, but I'd certainly play some longer to get imaginative ones.

I've got 1000 out of Bully and 900 from Top Spin 2. I go through phases of wanting to boost my score, whereas at other times (like now) I'm not so bothered...

Phantasy Star Universe gives you 1000 points for completing the single player game. While that is an achievement in itself (in terms of tolerating terrible voice-acting and repetitive gameplay) I think the lack of consistency in how generous games are with their achievement points is going to make this poll fairly meaningless. The only reason I finished PSU was out of crazed nostalgia for the Dreamcast's PSO.

My second highest scorer is Bioshock, but that's mostly because after playing it once myself and murdering all the little sisters, my goodie-two-shoes brother followed it up by completing it and saving them all. So I've picked two of the highest value options, but what does that say about how I value achievement points?

The statistical analysis at the end of this will have to be pretty sophisticated to convince me that the findings mean anything...

I hadn't realised my highest achievement score was for Tetris Evolution with 660. Next is Condemned with 520.

I think the best example of creative achievements would have to be Geometry Wars 2 as they give you new ways to play each game mode.

I caught 'em all in Bioshock.

I guess this makes me a 50's Pokémon Master.

Do I win a prize for having achievements in a game I haven't even played and don't own?

Thats the whole point. I'm sure that a number of people here have maxed out there favourite game but by listing the top two it seperates those people from the people who have do so habitually.

seems 50:50 from the looks of it so far.

1250 (Oblivion) and 1250 (Crackdown).

940 (Bioshock) is my top score, followed by 930 for Two Worlds. After that though, it's downhill at a sharp clip, with only about another 5 games where I've scored 400 points or above.

I can't check, but I'm pretty sure my highest by far is Crackdown, I think I've completed most of the achievements for that one.

I've been playing a stupid amount of Forza 2 recently but there aren't many achievements forthcoming from that one. I was at least hoping to get an achievement for completing the Nordschleife endurance race in under an hour ;)

600 in Crackdown (should be more, but I STILL can't find the last bastard Agility Orb I'm missing), then 540 for Guitar Hero II. Dead Rising, Brian Lara Cricket, Conan and Virtua Tennis are all in the 400s, Rock Band is only 300 despite being comfortably my most-played game (still haven't polished off the Hard guitar tour and really, really need to give the drums a proper go at some point).

Forza 2 gives a lot of acheivements at first, then is very stingy with them unless you are going for the 'own all cars' achievements (those are the hidden ones, btw) in which case you'll suddenly get a massive number of them right at the end. Probably the hardest for people to get is the 1,000,000 online credits, which I gradually accumulated racing with bezzies.

Do the difficulty settings work with online racing? i.e. if you win a race and you have TCS, STM and ABS off you get more credits than if you did it with them on?

I have 1000 in Oblivion and 960 in Bioshock (I should have done the game on hard really). Next highest is Crackdown at 690, but then I have nothing more than 300, and most games just in the 100 or so range.

That's a very good question, I don't think they do - I think it's calculated on the class of cars, track, length of race and number of competitors.

I did a 5 lap high speed oval race in ultra-tuned U cars with four opponents, the 1st place prize was over 50k if I recall correctly.

I have CoD4 on about 660, and then next up is something on 495... maybe Halo3.

I have a few in the 400s, and most of the other wallowing way down.

However, I am on the verge of getting a whole ton in TopSpin2, as I am nearing the end of a career in which I will have accumulated over 1000 career points, which will give me something like 300 points in one go and probably make it my top ranked game.

Om nom nom.

I'd say that achievements, when used well and not just grind-fests, are an excellent idea and things that make me get more out of a game than I normally would, even if it is just giving me a goal (after skipping my penultimate season on TS2 I basically need to win 3/4 of the Grand Slam tournaments or I miss out on the achievement).

So, whilst I am far from a whore for them, I do like that they're there, and can understand wanting to 'complete' games in that way (had their been achievements for Final Fantasy VII, believe me I'd have had all of them).

the best achievements are the ones that actually make you better at a game.

i mean, I've played Contra, Scramble and Paperboy for years but mostly in 3-5 min bursts on MAME before getting bored and putting Sunset Riders back on. maxing them out was incredibly satisfying. One crediting Contra is not the sort of thing I can even attempt normally.

I'm not a massive fan of the 'collect all the X' achievements but I do quite like getting into a grind and the 1000/1000 payoff is good. not exactly why I got into gaming but I enjoy it despite myself.

Getting 1000/1000 in Oblivion gave me the sense of closure to stop playing it that, after about 175 hours, I badly needed. There's still tons to do in the game but I feel like I could close the book on it.

And then a difficulty modifier is applied after that, which varies with TCS,STM , ABS, auto/manual and driving line.

Having only had the 360 for just over a month and playing mainly Burnout with the missus, my total (total mind you) stands at 200 (yes, hundred). Nice boost from playing Braid over the last 2 days but way off the big numbers.

Those poll results do tingle my stats love.

About 40% of BeeX peeps have maxed a game. But only 18% have done it twice.

With most people maxing out at about 600 for one game, and dropping beneath it by about 100 for their next highest.

So most people aren't compliationist - which is reassuring.

As such the NXE plan to list your gamerscore as Points Gained/Total Points of Games Played is going to cause a bit of a stink I think.

That would be annoying if they decide to include demos of XBLA games I haven't bought. I played nearly all of them for my XBLA (woefully out of date) Definitive Guide.

Mine currently reads 4580/49035, but I think that counts all the trial arcade games I've played regardless of whether or not I bought them afterwards.

If I've learnt anything from this, it's that I shouldn't be allowed to buy any new games until I've finished the ones I've got.

I think it counts disked inserted in machine and xbla purchases. It used to include trials thats why a few random XBLA games sit on my account like 'time plane' (or whatever the fuck it's called).

I got 1000 in Fight Night but that was just handed out through normal progression and got 1000 on CoD2 playing through on veteran which caused me rage at times but the 60 points each mission was enough to keep me going and the difference in the game between normal and Veteran is like playing a totally different game.

As a rule though I will go for an achievement for as long as I find it fun. The minute it starts become a chore (recently I am looking at you treaty in GW2) then I just forget it and move on without a second thought.
