We had a quick chat about this a month or so ago, but it's time to start getting more into this game, I reckon.

Given that Superman is basically indestructible, how can they put him in the game.

So who's in DC? I get confused between them and Marvel. You might have noticed I know nothing about comics.

Does someone want to lend me some?

You can download a program called comic book reader and then you can download the comics off a torrent.. I believe! Worth doing!!

The MK folk seem to be just as indestructible - Liu Kang died in one of the cut-scenes (in Deception maybe? I forget) and he's back for more. ;)

On Earth he is.

In the otherworldy setting of MK vs DC he's as mortal as you or I (but can still take a spear to the shoulder and a good dragging of course)

Magic. Srsly.

I had a brief, awkward interview with a hideously jet-lagged Ed Boon at the Leipzig Games Convention in August and when pressed, he said Superman's vulnerability was to do with the powerful magic that exists in the MK universe.

That, or Shang Tsung teleported into his bedroom into the middle of the night and slipped a bit of Kryptonite down his trunks.

I don't know which is more believable.

Watchmen, but that's a graphic novel, and not a comic.
Alright - Marvel Zombies. The art is the best I've ever seen, and the story isn't bad either.

I'll check Watchmen out. I've heard Marvel Zombies is not the best to start with, however.

The whole point of MK was its gory fatalities, but there's no way DC will allow their characters to be killed, so what does that leave us? I can't say I'm excited about it at all.

Watchmen should be read for an example of a good comic.

Watchmen's not really an ideal introduction to comics though, is it?

I thought I'd heard there were no fatalities in the game?

Yeah, I'd be surprised if you couldn't kill the DC characters. Dying in a MK game is a bit different to killing off a character in a comic storyline. If I can't rip Superman's head off, I'd be disappointed.

I think Watchmen is an ideal introduction to comics myself. I suppose it depends what you want from them. I don't think Killing Joke is all that good myself. Felt a bit like a non event. Long Halloween seems pretty good though. Dark Knight Returns is dreadful.

Personally I'm quite enjoying some old Savage She Hulk at the minute.

I was going to post that, then I remembered it was about the second comic I ever read if you discount some pre-adolescent flirtings with odd issues of this and that.

All the same, some "pure" superhero comic recommendations:

There are tons of great Batman stories around (and tons of crap, which is what happens if a character hangs around for half a century or so). If you liked Batman Begins, I'd definitely check out Frank Miller's Batman: Year One and/or The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb, both of which Chris Nolan cited as inspirations. Miller also banged out the consensus Best Batman Comic Ever in The Dark Knight Returns, but personally I've an enormous soft spot for Grant Morrison and Dave McKean's Arkham Asylum, a genuinely creepy story with some of my favourite art in any comic, ever.

(Actually, any "traditional" superhero stuff by Grant Morrison's always worth checking out, because the format seems to retain his always-excellent dialogue and inventive plotting while preventing him from going too far down the road to gibbering drug-fuelled madness as he can when left to his own devices. I'd particularly recommend his stint on JLA, but New X-Men and Animal Man are both worth reading too).

The Ultimates left me ever-so-slightly cold, but Ultimate Fantastic Four is terrific, particularly the Warren Ellis run on it. I also absolutely loved Ellis' Nextwave: Agents Of H.A.T.E. - brilliant knockabout fun. Slightly less knockabout but equally fun - Peter David's Young Justice and both his runs on X-Factor.

OK, I'll shut up now.

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. It's not DC, or Marvel, and it hasn't got any superheroes in, and it starts off in a rather hackneyed manner, but it is a well written and occasionally bleakly amusing story. 's by the chap what done wrote Invader Zim and all that. Fillerbunny. Yeah.

Is there a 'COMICS!' thread anywhere?

Ooo! Ooo! Yes! The Crow is awesome, and has Joy Division lyrics in and a bit with a horse and some barbed wire and is about a million times darker than the film!

Aye. It's astonishingly self-indulgent (we're talking quoting-the-entire-lyrics-of-Joy-Division-songs-levels of angst, here) and there's basically no plot, but it's bloody great.

My fave comics series of all time is "Hate" by Peter Bagge - it's like an animated sitcom, except it's on paper instead of the telly. Also a big fan of Evan Dorkin.

Though these days I mainly read Marvel superhero shit. It's a habit I am trying to wean myself off.

Sorry, missed this. Something to do with needing to know the backstories of certain characters. I don't really remember.

False alarm!
