When I first played OG Quake (PC GAMER cover CD demo I think) I was overwhelmed by the controls, as I was using purely keyboard control after coming from Doom. Using PageUp and PageDwn to tilt the gun angle was awful. And I managed to play Descent with purely keyboard controls.

I read a guide in the next issue that detailed how to activate and use MOUSELOOK and it changed my world. Strafing became a thing instantly! Rocket jumps! Shortcuts! Snap turns and twitch reactions! Incredible.

I was once described, by someone known as RawMeat, as "the best keyboard only QuakeWorld player in London, perhaps the country"

I transitioned to mouse shortly after and it took me months to get as good as I was before.

In other podcast news, Normal Gossip is great. The first episode was a bit weak, but after that it takes off.

It's basically a lady telling a true story to a guest. It has made me shout "noooo" at my van stereo many, many times.

My favourite episodes so far have been the sorority episode and the podcast fanfic episodes.

Radio 4: Oliver Callan Bins the Border

Last night's 18:30 show had a great premise - get comedians to discuss what things need considering for a united Ireland to work - but suffered from having too many people on the panel. I call this Infinite Monkey syndrome, but it applies equally to other shows such as the ongoing carcrash of contemporary Question Time. This resulted in not hearing all voices and not giving points sufficient time to develop.

Had some moments and as I've only ever heard Neil Delamere on the mighty Bugle it was good to hear him but otherwise a missed opportunity. For completeness I might listen to the second part next week, recorded in Belfast (last night's was Dublin), if I remember to switch over from Petroc, but otherwise just as likely to forget.

Been listening to Button Boys with comedians Glenn Moore, Sarah Keyworth and Pierre Novelli. Really very good. Very funny at times and satisfyingly nerdy chatting about games (game world you'd most like to live in, the game that made you rage quit etc). Highly recommend.
