Too much squinting or looking shocked in meetings.

I am going to pick up my new glasses today. It’s overdue as my current readers are six years old and I’ve powered up to varifocals. Not that it’s an official measure of anything, but I saw this today and thought the picture at the top was a stuffed toy owl with bushy eyebrows.

For the last few years I've been getting my specs from Glasses Direct. They're super cheap and they do that thing where they send you up to four frames to try out at home.

I reckon my next pair will need to be varifocals though so that might need to be Specsavers.

That said, my glasses are pretty small so I can look under them for close up stuff.

I have different prescriptions for close up and distance sight, so I either needed two pairs to swap between or varifocals. I got one pair for purely close up and the varifocals.

I have trouble finding frames to fit as I have a ‘button nose’ so I need frames that balance on the small bridge of my nose without touching my cheeks. My previous frames were from the ‘teens’ range, but I needed a greater frame depth for the varifocals. All a bit of a pain, tbh.

I’m naturally long sighted, and always has excellent long sight up until the last couple of years, but my eyes are ageing. The time it takes my eyes to shift between long and short focus is increasingly long, too.

Oh, I did get that new scan, too, where they showed me 3D models and photographs of the entire back and lining of my eyes. Peace of mind for me as my ma has a mole on the back of her eye which she has monitored. Mine are all clear and in good shape, at least. I do have an astigmatism which I don’t think was ever mentioned before, though.

EDIT: Since I was a child, though, I have always known that if I look only through my left eye everything moves down and right and looks very slightly greenish blue (especially looking at anything white), and if I look through only my right eye everything moves up and left and looks slightly pinkish.

It’s why I don’t think everyone ‘sees colour the same’ as each of my eyes see it slightly differently.

I see slightly different colours with each eye as well. And now I'm checking it, I have the slight offset between eyes too.

I would like to point out that the picture I saw here was on my phone.

I have just seen it on the laptop (albeit with my new expensive eyes) and it is obviously a raw chicken.

Important note - if you go to the Glasses Direct website, their adverts will follow you around for ever, and if you watch much youtube you will get sick to death of the little tune that plays on their little ad.

If you want to see something really cool, look up "the impossible colours".

I'll try and find the video I watched on it.
Of course it's Kyle Hill (though I thought it was Technology Connections)

I can see all the special colours. I like the Stygian blue test - I don't even need to glance right, just staring at the image in the left I see a halo of the blue around the circle.

This is probably why, many moons ago on a weekend away at a cottage, I was wandering around the adjacent crop fields in the dark seeing perfectly clearly because the leaves of the crops were an iridescent light source for me. Everyone else thought I was nuts.

I could see all of the colours, though I didn’t see anything that I didn’t believe couldn’t be replicated on screen. The orange, for example, was far more luminous than the background, but looked like a neon orange to me which a drive down the M6 will bring up plenty of.

So maybe I didn’t get it. :P

Since starting to wear glasses for distance (tv across the room - driving) my eyes are now very lazy and don’t even try anymore. I’ve recently noticed I can’t see things very close up like I used to do either… the sweet spot is now just working at my desk / laptop and looking at my sodding phone.

I think that’s just age, Z.

I’m long sighted. My assisted sight (reading glasses for short distances) hasn’t changed much, but my once-excellent long sight has decided to just not bother, either.

I reckon it’s part of evolution that allowed burdensome older people to get picked off by predators because they couldn’t see the danger coming, which eased the food demands of the community.

Then we circumvented that by maintaining family groupings, so if your kids liked you they might warm you when you were about to be eaten by wolves.

To make doubly sure you then tamed your own wolf to guard your pack as your eyesight and fighting stamina reduced.

And that, @mr Russell, is why we need to get a dog. Our whole family wears glasses. We’ll be doomed without a Schnoodle girl to protect us.

Totally agree.

Ziggy (Schnauzer) has saved me from countless squirrels and seagulls that I’ve failed to notice.

Thank you for your service, Ziggy.

How did you come to get Ziggy, @zardoz?

I want a Schnoodle girl, and I’m not 100% certain of the correct/safest way to go about it.

I've been putting off getting glasses for a while. I always thought I had great sight, especially at distance, but years of microscope use and then staring at computer screens probably haven't helped, but the main thing is just aging, I'm in the mid-40s now. Part of it my dilly-dallying is worry about expense, part is laziness, and part is that I can still do most of the things except read tiny labels and anything that my kids thrust into my face for me to read or look at cos it's super important.

Oh, and I also found myself recently doing that thing where I move my phone closer/further from my face until hitting the sweet spot of being able to see it properly.

My two dogs are now deaf, and all of us seem to have creaking and crackling joints. Probably easy picking for any predators now.

Sorry Mimi, just seen this. We contacted local registered breeders and put our name down to be considered for a puppy by the one closest to us. We wanted a male and salt & pepper markings and were lucky enough to get our first choice. It was reassuring to know we were scrutinised as potential owners (sign of a proper breeder than just some puppy farmer). He was weened with mum for the correct time and all jabs and paperwork registered with the kennel club.

He’s a handsome little nutcase and I can’t imagine not having him.

Good luck finding your girl.

He’s also a nefarious creature of the underworld. Sometimes.

Zomg. He’s super cute. How do you keep him from causing chaos now that he can fly?!

Ok, that’s great info, thank you. I’m looking for a schnauzer/poodle cross girl. Would love her in grey/salt & pepper, too, but won’t look until after Christmas/spring.

The answer is clearly MOAR DOGS.

Why is it a Schnoodle you’re looking for in particular, Mimi? If it’s the shedding / hypoallergenic nature both breeds have that covered, both breeds also need haircuts too.

Those are two big reasons, but also I just like crosses for offsetting breed-specific health issues a little (I know it’s not the same as having a true ‘mutt’ for that nice gene mix pooling, but still a little), but also because they are MEGA CUTE.

Temperament and activity levels, too.

I have also been thinking of a chonzer for many of the same reasons.

So many dog pictures to look at, so little time.
