Hullo Forum,

Our own inestimable Friend of the Working Man, The Internet's The Famous Richard Gaywood had the soopah idea of the BeeXWeex announcement thread thingy, in which we record and/or link to all of the bestest and most notable [citation needed]things that happen each week. This is a splendid way for us BeeXers what have been busy at work, on holiday, or spending time in a non-extradition country without internet access to catch up on recent events. However, people have mentioned that this place can be a little on the confusing side for new arrivals, what with all the in-jokes, cleekery and general silliness and Emogasms, and they may not want/be able to read a year's worth of BeeXWeex summaries to get up to speed.

So, as we do seem to be attracting the odd new arrival, and as there are doubtless current members who have no idea what most of the other posters are talking about half the time, I thought it might be a spiffing/slightly good/okay/meh idea to have a BeeX Guide - a sort of Glossary of Beex to aid the new reader.

This would combine the more notable of things contained in BeeXWeex (e.g. Burt tank) as well as an explanation of all those in-jokes (e.g. "Craster and Badgers", ""whatever, dick" etc) and catch phrases and whatnot. Any new and/or confused BeeXer, when confronted with something they don't understand, could turn to said handy guide to look up the offending words. This may not necessarily be able to entirely explain Shin, of course. ;)

Anyone at all think this is a worthwhile idea? If so I'll get on with writing one (submissions welcome, of course).

Toodles,

Mr C.

xx

I quite like this idea, as I still don't get half the jokes that go on here. I mean, I didn't even have any idea of the badger running joke. Did he have a badger problem, or likes mashed potato excessively, or what?

I have a suspicion that I lack a running joke. Not sure if this is a good thing or not.

I was called 'bolshy', I think by Dr Glyndwr, on account of my allegedly forthright opinions and bluntly 'Ey you guys!!' gregarious nature - which was found to be amusingly at odds with my forum persona.

Ahh yes. We need more pylon activity on this forum to keep it a running joke though, currently it's just sort of a stationary one. In the old War of the Worlds forum I was on a long time ago (before I became a pariah for admitting that I actually didn't like the Jeff Wayne tripod design) there was a bloke who was pretty obsessed with different types of pylon, Felicity Kendal and prog rock.

"Hey, Prog guy? Who should the new Dr's companion be?"
"Felicity Kendal."
"Oh. Well what should they do next?"
"Bring back the Rani. She was ace."
"Err. And who should play her?"
"Felicity Kendal."

(etc.)

Actually, before leaving I also told them I hated prog rock. And my defending Spielberg's Half-Awesome film didn't go down well with them either. God, internety life was so different back then. Thank God for you lot. (Clutches Beex like he would a teddy bear.)

We should do this 'welcome guide', and for a laugh make it really unwelcoming and incomprehensible.

Bad idea. As said above it's self important. There should be a landing page explaining that we're friendly and happy to accept new members. Sign up, start posting, we don't bite, etc. But explaining the in-jokes and stuff is probably more exclusive than you think. It's kinda "ooh hark at us, aren't we funny?!", although I realise that wouldn't be deliberate, it would just seem like that.

edit: And as much as I hate in-jokes and what have you, explaining them completely ruins them. There are no other forums that have to explain themselves like this. Just make it as welcoming as possible and people will pick up on the in-jokes if they're interested enough.
