Browsing through amigamusic.com i was just thinking how little i care todays gaming music. I can hum to almost every music from the amiga days, yet, with a few exceptions (morrowind...just because it was repeated over and over and the godly Metroid Prime soundtrack) i don't remember anything from the 32-bit period onward.

I went to see the Video Games Live show and was bit confused with people going crazy about Halo and Final Fantasy soundtracks. To me it's just strings and orchestral stuff that sound like almost every other game out there. Does anyone here still prefers the minimalism of synth based soundtracks?

The bar music from Beyond Good and Evil. I like the old time swing stuff in Fallout 3 too.

-the title music from Beyond Good and Evil.
-pretty much all of the music from Skies of Arcadia, but particularly the jaunty music of Sailor Island, the magical tinkly music of the far Eastern lands, the tribal beats of Ixa'taka and the epic adventure music that kicks in once you get the Delphinus.
-Sega Rally 2 had some class tunes, specifically the DNF? replay music and the dodgy jpop ballad that played for the snow level in arcade mode.

myp discovered the myspace page of the guys who did a lot of the lovely tunes for Top Spin 2. And on a recent Dave repeat of an old Top Gear, they used it there too!

Settlers 3, I haven't played that game in over 6 years, but still find myself humming the music on an alarmingly regular basis.

Top Spin 2, as Meaty has already mentioned.
The music from Bully is really good, though. Surprisingly good.
The Halo theme is pretty unmistakeable and I often find myself humming it if I've been playing it.
I love Jesper Kyd's stuff in the Hitman series and Kane & Lynch. Not exactly catchy, but quite haunting and melancholy.

The problem is that a lot of newer games use licensed music, so you don't get that quirky computer gamey music any longer.

Is there an OST available anywhere.

Not just the theme, I mean all the music.

The OST is the main theme sung by Lisa Musovsky remixed a BEEEEEEEELLION times, with mixed results.

Didn't you just go to their website (Solarfields.com) and download it all, Dimmers?

If anyone seeks game OSTs, you should google Galbadia Hotel which has a huge collection.

Yeah, I have that, I just wondered if there was a full OST.

I might just work out how to rip everything from the in game sound test, which you can play all the other pretty music from.

Edit: Isn't Galbadia Hotel down anyway?

Solar Fields contributed a bit to the trailer and some of the ambient stuff while you're wandering around. He's got a quite a few albums out, most of which are incredibly hard to find noe, it seems. I've got a fair bit that I've scrivened around for.

Damned right. Playing C&C Gold and hearing the music transports me back in time to Xmas 1995, as I sat downstairs annihilating Brotherhood of Nod tanks.

Katamari Damacy is an obvious one for a great soundtrack. See also its sequels and Vib Ribbon. I love old chip tune stuff though. The chip tune artists never seem to quite re-create that same feel. Their style tends to be more GBA than speccy/C64.

The 'star map' music is lovely in the way it fades in.

However, as of late I play Arse Effect with whatever music is in my 360's playlist blaring instead, as I mechanically grind my way through the plot for the fourth and final time.

I 'LOVE' the Last Ninja music (especially level 3). If anyone can link me somewhere so I can download the moosic and play it on my ipod, I will give you ... um ... my DVD of Mongol. Yeah, that'll do.

But you've gotta pick it up.

Would you like to borrow a game or two of mine? You know, for a bit of variety?

REZ especially the Eden track.

The old tunes in Fallout 3 & Bioshock are great.

Love the tunes from Outrun, Space Harrier (Mobile ring tone) and many from that era too, yes were talking about new stuff but whatevers.

YES! The main theme from We Love Katamari is King Of The Earworms. Now you've made me think of it I'll be humming it the rest of the night.

Naaa, na na na na na na naa Katamari Damacy!

I second Zardoz's nomination of Outrun. The main riff from the Outrun 2 version of Splash Wave is my current ringtone and never fails to raise a smile.

Daytona USA. The best darned cheesy Jpop you will ever hear. Ever.. Blue blue skiiiiiiiies... Amazing.

Rage Racer. I actually had the soundtrack to this in my car and used to thump wank out of it. Amazing soundtrack.

Ridge Racer. Wasn't as good as Rage but for back then it was incredible.

Road Rash 3DO. The rock songs in it were kick ass. Even had some soundgarden.

Some will probably deride me for this, but a swathe of the Final fantasy music is incredibly catchy.

My favourite has to be the music from when you are pretending to be a SOLDIER to march in the parade. Lovely booming brass. I believe it to be called "It's Difficult to Stand on Both Feet, Isn't It?"

Very much a fan of the Rez soundtrack. Have Rez on PS2 (no XBL account and the 360 isn't mine anyway so no Rez HD for me.)

I'm not sure if you're talking about the actual marching theme or the incidental music which plays when you're just in that particular area (and on the ship afterwards) but the marching theme is "Rufus' Welcoming Ceremony."

I too find some Final Fantasy music to be pretty neat.

As for other music which floats my boat (apologies for some oldies):

Katamari Damacy
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana
Metroid (specifically Super Metroid and the Prime series)
Diablo II (some of the music is very nice)

Also, if you're looking for gaming music a little off the norm, visit here:

http://www.ocremix.org/

Some of the remixers have done great things with some well-known and loved music.

Why not just download HVSID and export the TLN stuff from SIDPlay as MP3s? Alternatively, you could always grab BZPD's pro-recorded set.

Descent 2 has an awesome soundtrack.

As a bonus I play badminton with the guy who wrote it (the soundtrack, not the game).

As game music comprises about 60% of my favourite music in general, I never really know where to start in threads like this, but you could do a lot worse than to check out the Darius soundtracks. Their composer (Hisayoshi Ogura) is something of an unsung hero of gaming, for me; extremely versatile, never writes within his limits and always manages to keep his music hooky and memorable no matter how experimental he gets. In the late Playstation era he was one of the few guys who still sounded like he was writing music for games, too.

Also, this chap's YouTube channel is a fantastic place for geeking out, and he uploads new stuff all the time.
