Would it be possible to have a separate games forum instead of just having gaming stuff included in the general forum where we can discuss just games?

I generally only use the forums for the games and it would be usefull if I didnt have to scroll through all the other shit to get to them.

As I dont use the forum that often, I wont mind if you just tell me to fuck off and stop being selfish...but if a lot of the other more regular users also find this a good idea - then why not?

The biggest problem is that, like the sport lepers forum, it won't get spotted and the posting rate will be massively below the current rate.

I'm not really interested in games, I'm here for the chatting but the games threads are an interesting part of that. Taking them out into a seperate forum will make everything much quieter. So please don't.

Ramsea, you can use the search function to find the game threads that you're interested in.

There's also a mod work overhead in moving threads around if a game one goes offtopic or an offtopic goes onto games.

And could we still mention games in B+B?

I would, where possible, remove all classification, we simply don't get the SA levels of traffic needed for it. An obvious exception would be things like Song wars and mafiascum and even then the sign up threads are in the main forum.

I still feel that sports are off-topic from the main run of things to be seperate. Gaming is pretty central to what we do so should remain in the main forum.

See, I'm not against that idea, as it's possible to have a gaming sub-forum and for all the gaming threads to show up in the main forum.
That would rely on people creating them in the right place, though, or the mods would have to move them.

And, as you can imagine, the mods are frightened to do stuff at the moment.

All the filtering stuff is coded and in place, it just needs switching on. But in the short 'test run' we did, just getting people to choose the right icon from the list at the top proved to be... er... "tricky".

I've got a good idea. Why don't we use icons for each topic and get Grim... (now he's back) to create a filter, so you can just search for the type of topics you're interested in?

If only we had some sort of topic icon to differentiate threads.

I'm a member of football, festival and band forums, and they all talk about all sorts of crap.

I think of this as games forum in so far as it's the place I come to read about what people think about a game I might get, or if I want to talk about a game I've got I'll come here. The fact that other stuff goes on here doesn't stop it being a games forum to me. It's no more or less about a single topic than most other forums I visit that have some hobby or other as their central theme.

With "BETEO is a games forum. Well, it's supposed to fucking be.", I was referring more to the crap about people leaving and what have you cluttering up the place. Not the occasional thread about a TV show or whatever, which I enjoy lots.

As for the subforum idea, I've long wanted what Grim... is talking about. Basically, imagine a few[1] sub-forums under General Discussion, perhaps;

GAMES
CURRENT AFFAIRS
SPORTS
EVERYTHING ELSE

But unlike now, General Discussion itself then merges all the content from the threads in all the sub-forums in time order. So General Discussion looks exactly the same as today, but people like Bobby can view just the GAMES subforum if that's all they want. I think that would be ace, and be the best possible compromise between the opposing sides of this discussion.

The only adjustment people would need to make is that they couldn't create threads in General Discussion, they'd have to then enter a sub-forum and make it in there. I think Grim... has that rigged off the topic icons though, so you create the thread in General Discussion, choose a topic icon, and it goes into the right sub-forum by magic.

Hmm. I don't consider this to be a games forum. It's a forum full of utter nerds, so gaming will of course be heavily discussed, but that's not the raisin of being for this place. It wasn't at WoS either, as far as the community seemed to be concerned - in my few years poosting there, the vast majority of threads that were posted were not about gaming. Or maybe that's just how it seemed to me, as I tended to ignore the threads about ancient Saturn games and such other tedious guff.

Anyway. Sub-forums. Pah.

Still leaves several questions unanswered. The fate of B+B and threads that wonder between topics for 2.

B&B remains in General Discussion, perhaps. Threads that wander just remain wherever they are when they start, so a modest amount of game stuff ends up in the not-game bit, and vice versa.

Most users would probably do their reading through General Discussion anyway, so I don't think that would hurt much. It might help new people get started in the forum however (as I suspect new people are more likely to start off posting about games, perhaps just in the games forum, and gradually get drawn into the other stuff over time).

Some of these threads do develop a wistfulness of their own, yes.

Or just get rid of BnB and view the blog feed that Grim... set up instead.
