Grrr! Grrr to this demo!

I couldn't skip individual lines of the tutorial, and the tutorial never told me how to build a base.

I'm so angry, I can't be bothered to play the actual game bit of the demo.

Don't know about the demo but base building is stage 3 I think of the 6 stage tutorial in the full game.

Shoulda had the full tutorial. *taps foot impatiently*

I don't know why I was so bored playing through that not-all-of-the tutorial, but I was. I really, really was.

I thought the tutorials were not only well thought out and fun to play, but hilarious too.

Yeah, the main running gag was a touch weak but they played it excellently.

Evidently I should have used the sarcasm smilie. It seems I'm not very good at the lowest form of wit.

Finally got this the other day after holding out for as long as I could. I was gonna upgrade my PC and play it properly, but I caved for the £30 option. It's great! Still getting used to the controls and stuff, but I'm pleased to report that they haven't completely ruined Red Alert and it's pretty close to the previous two.

Red Alert 2 is probably (behind perhaps Counter-Strike and WoW) my most played game ever - I still play it regularly with my mate, and I was really worried about 3 fucking things up, but it's good. Obviously I'd prefer keyboard and mouse controls, but it's nowhere near as bad as I expected with a pad. Get it! Especially if it drops in price any further, which it probably will.

I gave up on both Live! C&C demos when I couldn't immediately tell what was being asked of me -- I'm new to this 360 lark and I pretty much love the thing already, but the games do seem to have a propensity for making you squint and the very moment a demo starts to walk that path it's not getting any more of my time and certainly not any of my sweaty cash. My telly is pretty big -- I shouldn't be peering into it like Mr Magoo, devkins.

RA3 in terms of graphics and tone seems a bit... cartoonish to me. Everything is painted in bright and obvious colours, and over the top characterisation. I understand that's what they were aiming for, but it's not the kind of thing I enjoy.

I considered C&C3 to be a lot darker, more realistic in terms of graphics, and more exciting in terms of plot. I might, might pick up RA3 when its on sale at ultra-bargain prices.

C&C3 - tiberium wars is 12.99 in Zavvi and other less shit retailers.

Is it worth it?

I'm with CG on this - I enjoyed the original RA's cold war meets Nazi science theoretical technology... but the weird zeppelins and stuff was a step too far for me in the sequels.

Yes, it is a good game and you'll get a lot of play time for that £12.99. I would recommend getting the Kane's Wrath expansion though too, if you can, the extra missions are good fun and the epic units it introduces are pretty awesome. My purchase of both of them is something I'll never regret.

Totally disagree. The first RA was just as zany. That's exactly how it's meant to be. I prefer the Red Alert series over vanilla C&C. Go back in time to kill Einstein, etc. Genius! I understand that you prefer C&C because I prefer Red Alert, but they're essentially the same game with different plot/factions and units, so it's worth a go.

The RAs have always been more cartoony I think. It's nice they do the series different enough for them both to be worth it but yes, your opinion of RA3 is accurate there even if I disagree about it being bad :)

I wanted this mainly for the gloriously silly cutscenes and comedy terrible attempts at Russian accents, and was not disappointed. I do rather wish for a mouse and keyboard when things get hectic though. Comrade.

I have RA3 on the pc like its supposed to be. I found the demo on the xbox annoying as you really do need a mouse and keyboard.

What I like about RA3 is, that unlike C&C3, its not really an option to tank spam to win a game and micro mangt is now an essential part of the game.

RA3 definitely plays differently to C&C3 and is well worthy of a purchase (despite the shitty DRM issues) even if you do have C&C3.

So, who has RA3 on pc so we can play co op? Sheepeh? CG?

I agree with everything here.

I don't own it, due to being a skanky unemployed type right now. When I have some cash I'll pick it up.

I love them both equally although I am playing Red Alert 3 more due to the fact that it whizzes along even on my relatively old PC with its basic graphics card.

I found the AI on Red Alert to be a lot harder to beat than C&C but that may be due to suspect tactics on my part.

I guess the question for me is, if I don't have a PC that'll run the latest RA and C&C games, is it worth getting them on the 360 or not? Talking about them being better with a mouse and keyboard is irrelevant for me - forget they exist on the PC, for a minute.

The trouble is, you can't.

Because if you're used to the PC ones your response is almost always going to be "What is this cra....why can't I.... TURN YOU FUCKSTICK!"

Whereas if you don't play m/k then you'll get used to it.

Halo Wars is going to be interesting then, as a RTS game that's built especially with the controller in mind.

there are certain gaming styles that don't lend themselves to joypad control IMHO. Oh sure, if you played Syndicate or Cannon Fodder on a SNES before giving them a go on the Amiga, you'd think they were fine games, if a little awkward. As soon as you get the freedom of mouse control though, you wonder how you ever coped. I don't think I could bring myself to try an RTS with joypad controls. But then again as (bizarrely) seen in the New Year Resolutions thread, I have specialist tastes in game control methods

It depends on the type of game, really. Strategy stuff like CivRev and Third World War and even Dune II worked fine on joypads because they weren't the sort of ludicrously complex, incredibly fast paced RTSes that only bipolar Koreans can keep up with.

Also the cracked version crashed and I wasn't feeling it anyway. Although I'm surprised to see the price has been chopped to a mere £15 already, clearly not a good sign.

CivRev is also turned based, if it takes you another 5 seconds to figure out the keys it doesn't matter too much.

*sigh* Yes, yes, but the other two have real time elements and were perfect playable with a joypad.
