So, anyone got any?

As mentioned in the Happy New Year thread, I have given up booze until my Birthday, March 15th. On top of this, I am going to go jogging/cycling at least once a week. This might not seem like much but it is a realistic target, and is more than I currently do!

So, what about you guys?

Huh - that's the wife's birthday.

I have no real 'new year's resolutions' as such. However this year will be the year I quit smoking, and I guess I might as well take that opportunity to get a little bit more in shape, health willing.

Well you will remember it then!

Is the quit smoking a serious one, or is it an annual comment?

My Dad "only" smoked until he was 36. Died of lung cancer at 60. Just letting you know if you need that extra encouragement.

I just thought, I can smoke crack until I'm 30, thus lose weight as well.

It's not.. nice.. sitting there watching your Dad die. Some would say soul destroying. So give up, eh. Best for you and your family.

After seeing at a very young age one of my only two Grandparents I ever knew (the rest died before I was born) in a bed, with a massive oxygen tank, no voicebox, wired up to every machine under the sun, I can say that it made my resolve to never start so, so strong.

And it was only furthered in the past few years when my only Grandparent I was old enough to have meaningful conversations with had a long, drawn out death due to smoking related illnesses a few years ago. It was so bad the doctors just told him to continue, as stopping would prove stressful and there was effectively no point by then.

Cut down on drinking... only going to consume half my units per week or die trying.
Get fit, and get my muscles back... Still remeber they days when I could bench press 135kg (297lbs or 21 stone) :(

:this: pretty much
Grandfather 1 was dead before I was born. Grandmother 1 died when I was 5 from lung cancer. Same deal, gasping for every breath even when connected to oxygen. Slow, ungood death.

Grandfather 2 died of cancer, again smoking-related. All of the above smoked like Chimneys. Just Grandmother 2 hanging on now at the age of 85. She stopped smoking 10 years ago after her husband died.

Also, education worked for me. They told us in school: Don't smoke, smoking kills you. Since I did not wish to die, I never started smoking. The logic was like, right in front of me.

On topic: No particular resolutions. If I have some form of plan I usually get moving on it before too long. Obviously things like 'go running more' and 'lose more weight' are constant and unchanging ;)

My resolution is essentially "anyone who gets in my way can fuck off". Interestingly, this change in attitude seems to be working already, as no fewer than four strangers approached me for pleasant conversations on my way back to stratford tonight. Three of them in London - London! - and one on the tube. One was a pretty girl who you will probably read about in the papers in a couple of weeks. Hurrah!

Are you going to axe-murder her then? I'm reminded of that picture of you with a knife clutched in a beadle-hand.

I'm glad you said that. I'd written it 3 times and backed out from posting.

"Girl, pretty, body found" reads the local news boards.

Here's a question. If somebody said you'd lose a limb in 2009, but you could choose which one, what would you choose and why?

I'd go for either leg. I don't get out much and it wouldn't affect my job too much.

Plus I'd lose more weight that way. ;)

Get published for cash money.

I actually think that after years of saying this and then sitting on my arse, I will actually do it.

But Bobby... no booze until March 15th? Nooooooo!

Though that might help with saving up to go to Vegas.

:D

Yeah, I'd go for my left leg. Fucking thing's done nothing but hold me back.

Perhaps the beadle-hand part was going a bit far, but on that particular picture at least, it's worryingly true.

I'd probably go for the left leg too. You can get fairly decent prosthetic, fucntional replicas for legs. As long as it works for general load-bearing, that's pretty sufficient. Losing an arm would be more of a hassle, claws just aren't as useful.

Actually I know a dude that only has use of his left hand, and he copes surprisingly well, and is pretty much a gaming nut. For things like Twilight Princess though, he was forced to get his gf to operate the nunchuk, which as you can imagine made it utterly fucking impossible.

I'd have said I could lose my left leg, but that means I've have to sell my car and buy an automatic. I have owned an automatic before now, and it's really not worth the extra trouble. Goodbye left arm, then.

Strange as it may seem, one of my new year resolutions is to post more on internet fora. I'm in the third year of college (alongside doing a full-time job), and while I've spent most of my free time so far prevaricating over getting shit done ("oh, I'll just check my email first. Ooh, a pointless Facebook quiz! I'll do that marketing assignment just after that, then"), I'd pledged not to waste time on saying how much I did/didn't like game/film/TV show/individual (X) on the internet, as it would count as 'distracting from my studies'. Even when I'd been offered the chance to do so for the website of an actual magazine, more fool me. Just as soon as year three is out the way, I'll have a lot more time to waste.

Why has nobody ever made a left hand joypad?

If anyone remembers the Atari Lynx, it had a feature that would flip the display 180 degrees to that deviant wierdos left handers could play on it easier.

Possibly because it is one of the few handhelds to have the screen in the middle as opposed to above the controls.

I don't think I've ever seen a lefthanded joypad... but you are only moving your thumb, and righthanders are using their LEFT thumb on the dpad anyway!

A fair few joysticks (the Saitek Cyborg 3D) allowed you to move parts of the grip around to suit your southpawosity (if applicable)

Sorry to hear that Dimmers :'(

My mum went back to the Quacks yesterday to have a check-up after she was told she has COPD. She's been doing okay in regards to ciggies-it's hard for her I know as she's smoked basically as soon as she left the womb! She's now just having 7 a day-which may still seem a lot to non-smokers-but it's better than her 40 or 60 she was doing a day.

Well done mummy! And well done everyone who's trying to give up this year, good luck!

[edit: Yeah I know I'm talking about people you don't know and being all facebooky and whatever-but I don't care :p so deal with it!]

As a left hander, I use regular joypads, and wonder how righties got on with them ever, because they are obviously, and always have been, since back on the NES/Master System, designed for left handers.

Funnily enough, I've always thought guitars were backwards too. Surely you'd want your dominant had doing the intricate fret work? Being a right-handed, non-guitar player (GH aside) though, I might be wrong

my brain hurts just looking at that thing. Ouches!

edit: Also, my brother and I had some trouble over new year playing GTA4 in a swappy turns sort of way, cos I like inverted Y-axis and he doesn't and if I ever forgot to switch it back the mere action of pushing up on the analogue made me feel very dizzy and ill. Odd really.

I could never, never play a flight sim where pushing down didn't make the plane's nose go up. It's unthinkable.
