The Dark Knight pulled in a record-breaking $18.4 million JUST from midnight shows this morning, breaking the all time record previously set by Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith.

Everyone is now waiting to see if Dark Knight can break Spider-Man 3's opening day record of $59.8 million today, as well as Spider-Man 3's opening weekend record of $151.1 million.

Casually written, but the facts check in. I'm delighted that so far, I'm seeing rave reviews and ecstatic ticket sales. Hoorah!

The Dark Knight has had me giddily excited in anticipation, ever since seeing this, in its three component parts.

Anyone else considering maybe perhaps watching it a bit?

At the risk of being a heretic... I'm not convinced. I didn't like Batman Begins so I'm skeptical at best of this.

I thought about blowing up my local cinema, and exploding the queueing masses into a fine red iron mist.

But all I got was this lousy t-shirt: EMKPLOYEE

It is riddled with errors.

Looking forward to it. No idea if we'll go to see it at the cinema, though, haven't been to the cinema in yonks.

I wonder how Heath Ledger is as the Joker? The casting was roundly laughed at when it was first suggested, but I think he has (had) the talent to make it spectacular and perhaps reinvent the role somewhat.

Mildly connected via the Heath Ledger participation, but I bought that Don't Look Now film (about the life of Bob Dylan) which has now arrived and I am looking forward to watching.

Mimi - there has been considerable talk of Heath Ledger getting a quite obscene number of posthumous awards. Not simply because he's dead, and that, but because he's supposedly THAT GOOD. And from what I've seen, have imagined etc. I think he's going to be a perfect Joker. It's supposed to be a bit good.

I do hope so, CUS, and as you say, not just due to his early death.

I really d think that he will have made the role something else, I think he is a wonderful actor. I hope the film is a good'un and adds to his short legacy.

He was a fantastic actor, and I really, really hope his performance is fantastic enough to deserve a posthumous oscar or whatever, rather than have him given one just because he died so young, I think even he would be unhappy about that.

Parrs Wood in Didsbury are showing this on Wednesday. 12.50 for the screening, though you get an A3 lentificated (or something) poster.

The Odeon near us is rumoured to be showing special advance previews of this on Wednesday. Which means I'll be able to orange Wednesday it up!

Watched Batman Begins in preparation again last night. And all the extras. Crikey that's a good film.

Hilariously, I'm seeing this at 2:30 AM at the Imax on Saturday. And for the past week, I've been giving equally hilarious lessons to my girlfriend about the difference between AM & PM.

Still, I suppose it makes to see the Dark Knight when it's... err... a dark night.

Yep, :this: is why I lurk.

Due to a small pricing error in my local Gamestation, I today purchased Batman Begins to watch on my BluRay player and occasional games console. As a result, I have now seen the first six minutes of The Dark Knight.

Arrggghhh! I wanna see the rest of it now!!! Can't wait till Thursday!!!

Here's something rather impressive, I think. Sourced from this BBC article.

Quote:
The last Batman movie, Batman Begins, in 2005, grossed nearly $49 million (£24.5m) in its first weekend in North America.

It went on to collect about $372 million (£186m) worldwide.

Quote:
The sequel took $155.3m (£77.7m) surpassing the previous opening weekend record set by Spider-Man 3 last year, which took $151.1m (£75.5m)

Unless that article is rather misleadingly written, it appears that The Dark Knight has taken half of the total box-office receipts in one weekend in America as its predecessor managed in its entire worlwide release.

Now, this is before adjusting for inflation. However - these figures have been up on the BBC's site since this morning, it's just only now that they've 'clicked' with me - and of course, it's currently midnight, meaning that it's still only 4pm on the US west coast. I would strongly, strongly expect for it to have taken enough since the BBC article first went up, to counter-effect inflation.

It does look entirely possible that it will actually take half of the total receipts as its predecessor, by Tuesday, and just in the US.

Crikey.

I can't imagine this film would be doing half as well if a certain Mr. Ledger hadn't carked it (see also: The Crow). It would appear that he was very good in the role though.

On a side note, Christian Bale was interviewed on the telly this morning - what a grumpy bugger! Still, to be fair, if he'd woken up with anything even resembling the toothache I did this morning, he'd have every right to be as grumpy as he likes.

You are correct. The Dark Night is doing all kinds of crazy business at the US box office -- it's so busy cinemas have been selling out at stupid times like 3am and 6am.

Inflation adjustment isn't a massive factor over those three years either. So yeah, a little under half the first films worldwide gross, in one country, in one weekend.

The Dark Knight has so far made made something over 500,000 billion zimbabwean dollars.
