I feel the same about religion. If you were born in Texas you'll most likley be born to a Christian family, if you were born in Pakistan, most likley born to a Muslim family.

Nah, I am happy to be English*. I think that the place that you live does instill in you some local values and foundations for how you feel. When I travel to other parts of the U.K. I am reminded of how English I feel. Scotland and Wales both feel very different from England to me - neither better nor worse, but different. I have lived in different parts of England - small Island off of the coast of Kent, to the capital city, to 'oop North' in Lancaster, but they all feel 'English'.

I don't think that a pride in your country is a negative thing at all, and I don't think that it is as confused with being a racist as people make it out to be. I think it is a good thing for people to be interested in their heritage, in being English I feel that the history, story and culture of the country add to our every day lives. Shakespeare, Chaucer, Milton, cream teas, bacon butties, Sunday roasts.

*I am also not of English parentage, but it's complicated. I was born and rasied in England, so I am English. And I do say 'English'. I once shared a house with a girl who would always correct people 'you are not English, you are British!' yet always referred to herself as Welsh( :?: ) as she was proud to be born in Wales (which is fair enough, although it later transpired that she was born in Liverpool...) She also once had a big rant about some people visiting the town saying how picturesque 'England' was, and came back in a huff because they were visiting 'Britain' - though of course they were only going to the English part of the British Isles.

I think that is specifically a Devonshire tea - npot that I know too much about scones r anythng, but there's a different way of layering the cream and jam - you put cream on both sides and jam in the middle with a Devonshire tea, and I think Cornwall has a different type of scone? I can't remember.

Anyway, the whole 'is Cornwall English' thing, because of racial differences hundreds of years ago is a whole new layer of cake (or scone). To me, yes, Cornwall is part of England, bringing Amanda's discusions almost full circle.

Do many people in Cornwall still speak the old languages, Amanda? Is there an effort to regenerate the language as there is in Wales?

In Devon scones, jam and cream is the thing but in Cornwall its normally splits, jam or treacle and cream. My lot call it 'thunder and lightning'. Clotted cream - Roddas it is called first then the jam or treacle on top.

Yeah, we've got the Cornish language thing. There spending loads of cash on it. There's two full time people at county Hall and all the signs are being redone in English and Cornish and they're teaching primary school's Cornish language now. Course the nutty, or naughty, nats spray can it everywhere telling everyone Cornwall isn't England but those that don't speak Cornish won't know what is being said. There's books written in Cornish as well and they reckon there are about 6,000 speakers of it. A shop in my town sells tons of the stuff and did have an art gallery of all the grafiti art but the speakers of it are always bitching at each other about how to say the words and how to spell them. There's loads of websites just google Cornish Language and you'll see. It is meant to be very similar to welsh or Breton French so father says.

I reckon the money would be better spent on low cost housing noone down here can afford to take out a mortgage.

Well, I can understand that the preservation of language is important to many people, but not to the point where it turns into some guerilla movement. I think that Welsh and the old Cornish language both stem from Celtic and the old English, if I remember rightly, which I probably don't. Myoptika has a handy book on the subject ;) .

As I understand it Welsh, Cornish, Breton and strangely Basque are all similar "Celtic" languages, distinct from the Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages. I think this may be a Celt / Pict thing but I am not educated enough in this area.

I'm not a Welsh speaker, but we once holidayed in the Basque area of France and they all got excited when they found out we were from Wales as apparently they could speak Basque to us and there would be some level of mutual understanding had we been Welsh speakers, which we weren't.

My understanding was also that the Cornish language was spoken by so few that it was in danger of dying out all together when the few oldies who spoke it from childhood died? Welsh is going through a real resurgence at the moment, places in Welsh primary schools are having to be created at a substantial rate to deal with demand.

I think the EU really allows for regional identity to become stronger. On the other hand I strongly believing that breaking up the United Kingdom brings no benefit to Wales, Scotland and even less so Cornwall. Their economies are not self sufficient and rely heavily on central government's redistribution through the UK. Arguments to the contrary always seem flawed to me or revolve around EU handouts instead, hardly a satisfactory alternative to me. And to boot, it would allow the local politicians to run the place! How is that a good thing?!

Only in the same way that the filth of Da Port claim Newportonian as a language. Which it is not.

I'm afraid they are just other lazy Chav dialects. Maybe in 500 years time they will be bona fide languages but not right now sorry.

My Dad is currently learning Cornish. He was born in Penzance, and is retired and has a lot of time on his hands it seems. No one has spoken Cornish as a first language of a couple of hundred years, so it's not on the same level as Welsh or Breton. My dad did use some Cornish words in his everyday speech, and his mother used a few more.

Have I mentioned before how much I hate this?

"I love it here in England."
"I think you'll find it is 'Britain'."
"Oh. Sorry. Don't want to offend the British."
"I'm not British, I'm Welsh."
"Well, make up your fucking mind, you can't have it both ways."

as long as this country's official name is "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" every citizen is officially 'British', even those in NI (mod please check ;)). Saying you're English, or Welsh or Scottish is just being specific. To most of the rest of the world, saying your Welsh means about as much as saying you're from Cardiff. They'll still think you live in England. Maybe we should start using English-British, Welsh-British etc like those muddy funsters across the pond. Nah, that's a shit idea. As you were

It's not so strange if you realize that the celts were mileasians (sp?) who migrated from mainland europe, more specifically the spanish area.

Hmm... That's not really true. I mean I do know a few words and they are admittedly mostly sport related, but I wouldn't say a good grasp.

Besides, I suspect that Welsh is secretly English with an "ee-oh" sound on the end of the word and followed by o gwbl ("oh-gooble"). Saying "Dim <english word>io o gwbl" frequently results in a valid Welsh phrase, meaning "no <english word> at all"! This upsets genuine Welsh speakers as it is clearly libellous. But it's a good game.

That sounds like a cool idea. Wikipedia disagrees, but that doesn't mean a lot. I bet that woman with crazy wiry hair who used to be on Time Team would know this. Miranda something I think she was...
