I feel somewhat better, so I'm off to do some food shopping and to get the Grimlet out of the house for the first time since Sunday (because Mrs. Grim... is ill, I got to dress him, so he's in his superman costume :D). I'm not working on my Tomcat this weekend, so I can take the cash I'll save on petrol and spend it on a 360 game. Pick one for me!

That's a toughie. UT3 is no good as a single player game, but excellent for bezzieness... but we hardly ever see you online. Fallout 3 is utterly fantastic, and I've not played Fable II.

Edit -- UT3 is also a rip-off in most places, but is in Gamestations 2-for-£30 preowned deals, which is OK.

Fable II is excellent and can be finished in under 30 hours. I haven't played Fallout 3, but from what I've seen you might have to dedicate the rest of your life to it, especially if you don't have much spare time to game atm (and I haven't seen you around much lately).

UT3 is decidedly meh. I'd rather play multiplayer GoW2 over that anyday.

Fallout 3 is what I think I broke my Xbox with because I put an insane amount of hours into it very quickly. I really tired of oblivion but loved this, so I vote for that.

I played the demo of UT3 and it left me cold. I haven't played Fable II..

EDIT: myp is write it is a time sink.

Have you played Mirror's Edge yet? If not, Mirror's Edge.

Fallout 3 is great too.

The multiplayer is much, much improved. I can't comment on the campaign yet, as I'm waiting for Meaty to buy it.

Mirrors edge is wonderful.

And can be short if you don't like time trials. Or a huge time sink if you do.

If you're a masochist.

Whoever decided that an already pretty tough 1st-person puzzle-platformer needed the addition of bastards with guns who unavoidably kill you every 30 seconds in certain sections needs tying up in a sack full of doorknobs and kicking down the stairs.

I intend to rebuy it on PC whenever I upgrade, and hope that by then there are "no bad guys" mods, or at least something that fixes the problems with combat.

You can complete Fallout 3 in the same kind of time as Fable 2.

Just that it's not really the point of the game to finish it.

You could say the same about Fable as well. It's the journey rather than the final destination.

Fallout 3 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fable 2

I really must go back and finish Fable 2 but it feels like a chore I think not being a huge RPG fan and playing it after Fallout 3 really ruined it for me.

If you're not a big RPG fan why did you buy two RPGs so close together, may I ask? I'm not either, btw, but then again I haven't bought either of them.

I loved Fable II, though.

I would think because they are two high profile games that came out at the same time and both dropped in price quite quickly?

I bought Fallout 3 around 2 weeks ago and love the way that i can put an hour or two into it each night and actually accomplish something (currently level 13 and i guess a little more than 1/2 way through the story).

I also bought Fable 2 last week cause it was cheap (second hand) although I haven't even loaded it up (i also have mirrors edge which i haven't touched and that's probably my next stop after I 'finish' Fallout 3 for the first time)

Because I played Fallout 3 and loved it, it was a revelation. I was sad when it finished and wanted more of the same sort of fun, Fable 2 didn't provide it, mostly it just reminded me why I'm not all that into RPGs and underlined how exceptionally awesome Fallout 3 is.

Fair enough. I wouldn't really say that Fable is your typical RPG either, though. I couldn't get on with Oblivion, for example.

If you have no trousers on, that strategy works even better.

Actually reading it back this does sound a bit harsh, Fable 2 isn't bad at all, but it's nowhere near as good as Fallout 3. I'm sure if I'd played it first I'd have enjoyed it a lot more.

Fallout 3 isn't an RPG to me, so much, it's a story-based FPS with knobs on.

Except the combat is decided by (essentially) stats and dice rolls, is it not? So nothing like an FPS.

See also - bear suits.

The kid and the wedding ring mitigate against it going any further, though.

Unless you have a gander in their nappy, you can't tell the difference between boys and girls until they're at least 4.

All babies look like boys. This is why the girls get pink clothes.

As far as I can tell your stats determine how hard the weapons hit and your percentage chance of hitting body-parts in VATS, but you can play it pretty much as a straight FPS if you so desire.

Anyway - I've played both, loved both. Yes, there are obvious similarities but they feel like completely different types of game to me.

The combat in FO3 must be quite different from Oblivion in that case.

It's like a nerdier than average FPS if you will. With gore that makes MK look like tea party in a teddy bear factory.

Yes it is.However...

I have made a number of clear shots with the sniper that miss. I feel that the modifiers used on the rolls (or baps if you will) are so drastic in normal combat that they take away most of the roll chance of missing. I.e. the mods used on a roll of a short distance shotgun blast that is on target are sufficient to effectively emulate a FPS. However, the mods used on a long distance sniper shot are significantly less so there is a greater chance of missing. Effectively like a FPS, but with specific rolls against stats. Or it could just be a hit/miss scenario.

One thing which I find annoying is if you aim your shotgun at a body part (head) in VATS and it misses and only hits the body, you don't seem to do much damage.

It's true. I could strip, clean and reassemble a shotgun in less than 40 seconds when I was a teenager.

Stripping women took a little longer (and reassembling them was much harder, etc).
