now with the recent price cuts, i'm seriously thinking about getting one. I still have some issues with them:

-Are they still as reliable as a piece of butter under the sun? do the recent 65nm models prevent the rrod problems? Every model of the console comes with this upgrade?

-Does any of the models come with wireless adapter? if not, is there any decent alternative to the overpriced official one?

-Do we still have to pay for xbox live?

-Is the elite model worth it?

1 - They've always been fine in 2/3rds of cases, now they are vastly more so. All models are internally identical.

2 - No. Yes, use a standard wireless bridge and configure it on a PC. Or use wires like a normal person.

3 - Yes.

4 - No.

I'm on my 4th. 2 (or was it 3?) of which have been the "reliable" model. That said, I do rather like it. Them.

How are any of them internally different? There's some cosmetic changes on the outside (Silver disk tray on the pro, the elite is black) and different accessories packaged but the machines themselves are identical.

Wires can be bought in "Long" and hidden completely imperceptibly under the carpet next to the wall. Wireless doesn't work properly.

That said, if you insist, I've already given you the solution with the bridge idea :)

Same machines but with different hard drives clipped on the side.

Hard drives fit on as easy as pie, but the cost a buggering large amount to buy, so upgrading later is a bit much. Saying that I'm tempted by a 60gb hard drive if I can ever find one chearp.

I think the install to HD option coming sometime soonish might be lovely. (it installs the whole game to the hard drive, and only needs the disk for a drm check - this isn't like the PS3 - it's not mandatory, it's just to stop the largest fan noise ever, and slightly speed up loading.)

But with a 20Gb hard drive, and games being 6 - 8 Gb I'll struggle to make space for a single game....

I think their frailty has been overplayed a little. I got one fairly close to launch and have had no problems at all.

I have the official wireless thing that works fine. Rip off though.

Mine's been fine too but we've just been lucky. When figures suggest that one in three have failed I wouldn't say that's overplaying it.

I have deliberately kept mine in a very airy spot though and avoided stacking it on top of anything else that gets warm.

I worry it may become all BUT mandatory though. They could make it non-mandatory on PS3, it'd just take 5 minutes to load some things and I fear we'll shift the same way.

Oooh, people just giving up on loading times (even more so than already)?

Fuck, yeah that makes perfect sense.

Damn your eyes Dudley. :(

After years of scoffing, the bigger hard drive is finally looking like it might be an idea to get, what with so many games finally having large and worthwhile DLCs.

I refuse to move mine as well. A mate wanted me to take it to their house, but I said no, no, no.

When we moved house in March I was shitting bricks.

Moving it shouldn't break it, for god's sake. The innards break because of the heat, and the drive breaks because of all the thrashy streamed games it runs.

I have it stacked with DVD cases under the edges, so air can flow underneath.

mine's on a slattted wooden stand, for coolness.

I got an elite for the 120 gig drive, I'm done fretting over console storage after my Wii disappointment and my Playstation '6 memory cards' problem.

Between music, DLC, live games (I buy a lot) and the forthcoming HD installs (for GTAIV but not perhaps Bullet Witch, I reckon), I'm glad I've not got to worry about running out of room, had it 6 months and still got 100 gig and that's with a demo f just about every half decent game going on there.

Heh, I bet you got all the memory cards in different colours as well for your PSX... I had to. You had some games that ate almost an entire card on their own... whereas for the PS2 you'd have to play a ridiculous number of games to even come close to filling it.

I might be being paranoid about moving it around, but I'm not taking any chances.

I read an interview with Rockstar North, saying that the next GTA game might not be possible to do on the 360 due to space constraints. Hopefully the install patch will put paid to that. I wouldn't mind if it showed up on two DVDs...

Well, it IS cheaper than upgrading a PC.....

<grins>

I've had mine since november, although it gets light use, there's been no problems, but I am now thinking about getting XBOXLIVE for a whole year as it's fun every now and again to sit in the passenger seat of an armoured car as MeatAngle drives around, and spray bullets wildly at things.

I even went for those cards where you had the one card with a button on, and could cycle between four 'cards' as the machine sees them.

Gaywood had one of those for his Dreamcast... it was teh l33t, as it could also be hooked up to a PC via USB for easy save-backing-up-ery.

Thank goodness the Dreamcast was one of the last consoles with shit save game capacity. To this day I'm still not sure where all my PSX memory cards are.

My Eggbox 360 got the red ring of doom after about 14 months, but Microsoft sent a courier to pick it up and returned it, fixed, within 2 weeks, at no cost. My experience was very positive, so I would not be too concerned about it breaking.

And I am completely addicted to Halo 3 on Xbox Live. So I reckon it's worth it.

The XBOX Pure sounds (if true) like it might be a nice little box if mine ever gives in. My egg box has been going to ages (generation uno)... I did have to send it back but only due to the DVD drive being covered in dust.

That was a site making up a rumour to see who would report it I'm afraid.

Ironically my Egg Box has just red ringed. I did the towel trick but it only solved it for a few minutes.

I bought it shortly after launch. Any hints on getting it fixed?

Log on to http://www.xbox.com and file a repair request. Microsoft will send a UPS courier to collect it and ship it back to you when it's fixed. No cost to you at any point.

Alternatively if you bought it from a shop legally you're entirely entitled to storm in and let them deal.

Likely to take longer although there is the slim possibility you'll get a brand new one that way.

You're right on the end of your 3 year RRoD warranty though. Make sure you do it as soon as possible.

Costs moolah otherwise.

They were very good when mine did it though, didn't cost me a penny. Next time, if there is one, it'll be out of warranty though.

Well, that's one of the most common incorrect statements i see around. I want an xbox mostly because of the live retro stuff, and being on the couch is much better since i spend all day in front of a computer. But pc stuff is incredibly cheap these days. For around 500€ you can have a very very capable machine of running games with such specs the xbox could only dream of replicating.

According to the Microsoft web site the console is out of warranty and I have to pay almost £70 to get it fixed.

Poo Sticks :(

EDIT: It actually says my warranty expired on 8/11/2005 7:59:59 PM

Surely not?

That was your 1 year warranty. Keep going with the process and tell it you have RRoD.

No, that isn't right - the 360 wasn't released over here until december 2005, so teh one year warranty couldn't have run out a month before the release.

I just emailed Craig saying that my brother's XBox red ringed last week. He couldn't find the warranty either, so on ringing them the said that he had no proof of purchase date they would have to charge him to fix it.

After a bit of angry shouting that it had to be less than three years old because the console hadn't been out for three years as yet they admitted this and are fixing it for free.

Give it a go.

An excellent point, well made. :D

It does still say it's going to charge you UNTIL you push the button that says it's an RRoD and agree that you give your soul to Microsoft if you send it in with an RRoD and it doesn't have one, so carry on and it should let you get away with it.

Mine says

Current Warranty Status
Device: Xbox360 Hardware
Serial Number: 316179154305
Warranty Status: Out of Warranty
Warranty Type: Repair
Warranty Start:
Warranty Expiration: 7/22/2008 7:59:59 PM

Notice no start date at all on mine.

Yeah, you don't need to ring them and it doesn't tell you it's a free repair until after you confirm it's the red rings. Just go through the process on xbox.com and you'll be fine.

Why? Any warranty the manufacturer offers they have to handle surely? A warranty extension unless actually purchased from MS doesn't change who your contract of sale is with.

Bollocks, they have a 3 year warranty and it's less than 3 years since launch. QED.

First few times I phoned, I got this line, next time (having spent a while putting myself in an arguing mood) they didn't even query purchase.

When I tried to book the repair online, it kept fucking up at me. So I called the number provided, and the guy took ALL THE DETAILS DOWN before telling me that the number in question (a US 800 number) wasn't any good and I needed to phone the UK-based number, TOMORROW.

Whereupon I spoke to a foreign chap who sorted it all out.

And apart from UPS being complete idiots, all was well.

Everything was fine on the phone I just gave him the serial number and told him what was wrong with it. He said it was out of warranty but that Microsoft had extended it for three years for the RING OF DEATH. So it's all being fixed for free (although I do have to provide a box).

Maybe I'll find a life in the next three weeks, eh?
