I remember when you could phone up Sony and say "I'm in the media" whereupon they'd bung you a Playstation and send you a copy of something good abut once a month, like Tekken 3 or Spyro or that. How the mighty have fallen.

I can't see the Vita doing well. Does anyone want to play games like Uncharted on a portable? I'd rather keep them for the big screen experience and play mini games on a hand held.

Having played with one: the graphics and screen quality (and size) are legitimately impressive. Uncharted looked great. The new d-pads are pleasant to use and the touchscreen is neat. I'd say it's a nice piece of kit, overall. I'd be far more impressed if it ran Android and hence had an open games platform, because it'd be a cracking emulation machine.

If I did any serious amount of travelling, or if my daily commute was longer, I'd be all over this. I'm happy to play Uncharted or anything else as long as it's a good game and as long as I've got decent length stretches of time to play it (e.g. half four commute). As it stands though my commute is ten minutes and we rarely fly long-haul so I won't pick one up the same way I haven't bothered getting a PSP despite how cheap they are these days; I want it but I can't justify the expense and the carrying around of another gadget.

I've not followed it too closely, but I'm sure I heard in the pre release rumblings that it will sort of support android apps, but only in the sense that it will be incredibly trivial to port android software too it, it's not going to have the google market or support sideloading of android apps or anything like that.

Are the sticks any good? I quite like the look of Dynasty Warriors. I'm in no position to be buying one at the minute, though. Maybe for Christmas when there are loads of games out and stuff.

Looks pretty swish, but it's really just the psp all over again, isn't it? That was some frankly gorgeous tech for the time too. Some people are enthusing about the second analog stick, but I can't really picture playing shooters on a tiny screen without it being a total headwrecker regardless of controls. Maybe if they use some clever visual design to help the games read better on smaller displays or something.

The graphics fidelity might go against it I feel, as downloadable titles could easily start going into silly file sizes with all those resources at hand. Couple that with expensive proprietary memory and it's a bit of a mess waiting to happen.

That said, I'll probably be all over it as soon as there's a couple of Valkyria Chronicles/Disgaea-style games on there.

The killer app could be them squeezing a shooter onto it (COD!) but the way they are messing about with the different options (wifi / 3g) and what you get with them makes it a bit odd at the moment.

I was very keen on seeing how Mod Nation Racers turned out on it given that the PS3 one was great but the early reviews complain of really long loading times (minutes - its on a bloody memory stick for ****s sake!) , and *NO* online mode !
Given that Mario Kart for the DS (not even the 3ds) was doing online cart racing in 2005 I cant see how they can bring a game out 7 years later missing what many would consider a key part !

I got to have a go on one in our local Game branch last week. It's a nice bit of kit bigger, chunkier and more substantial (in a good way) than the PSP and the two analogue sticks actually seemed to work brilliantly on it. Seriously, one of the games I played was Katamari, and I thought it was very comfortable to hold and use both analogue sticks, which is quite something considering how dire the one stick on the PSP was.

That said, I can't see me buying one.

My friend has one of these and he reckons it's great. He's a big Sony fan though so I didn't expect him to say anything else really.

He did have about 4 PSPs in it's lifetime though so we'll see how this one lasts.

I won't be buying one obviously.

I had a play around with one at the weekend and its a nice enough unit (although a little large) - but none of the games seemed that great (uncharted & a tennis game) the 'non standard' memory card also is a bit annoying (especially with the inflated prices)

I bought a PSP in about 2007 where I got, for less than the launch price in 05 of the PSP, a console, Killzone game and 4 gig memory card. Then I hacked it and use it to play Atari ST games. I'll do the same with Vita.

Hmmm - Sony now seem to have a new way to stop people using exploits on released games to get their systems to run unsigned code - can anyone guess what it is ?

Yes - they have simply removed the games from the store - so if you *paid* to download them and do not have your own backup then you cannot re-download them

Fast forward to Sunday, when the Wololo hackers teased that they had found another exploit in Japanese and European PlayStation Store download Everybody's Tennis that could, in the hackers' tongue-in-cheek words, be "extremely dangerous for [Sony's] business," by letting people play titles "such as 20 year-old 8-bit games and 154 different versions of Pong." Following form, Sony once again removed the game from the PSN store just before the hackers publicly released the new exploit yesterday.

Wololo claims its VHBL hack is useful only for running homebrew software and not for playing pirated PSP or Vita games. Still, Sony has taken a zero-tolerance approach to players running unauthorized code on its systems in the past, usually responding to breaches by releasing re-secured firmware updates, which hackers subsequently re-hacked.

Now, Sony instead seems to be using its control of PSP game downloads on the Vita to try to cut off the supply of exploitable games as quickly as possible, opening up a new front in the war for control of the Vita hardware. They might have an uphill battle on their hands, though, as Wololo's hackers claimed to "collectively have access to about 5 to 10 user mode game exploits in psp games" earlier this month, and have created a so-called "exploit factory" to easily port VHBL as new exploits are found. We could be entering a new era in the Sony hacking wars, where exploits are first released quietly before being publicly deployed as tactical weapons that whittle down the number of downloadable PSP titles available from the PlayStation Store.

The Wololo hackers claim the exploits would only be able to run homebrew games and not pirated PSP or Vita titles, but it appears the platform holder isn’t taking any chances.

Sony has now pulled both games from the PlayStation Store, and pulled them good: even if you’ve legitimately purchased the games previously, they’re now no longer available for download.

It may all be for naught though, as the hackers claim that tools for making the most of the exploit are already done, and in the hands of thousands of users.

I assume that Sony will be working on fixing the exploits in the games and then reinstating them in their store? If so, as long as they don't take too long over it, it doesn't seem they're being too evil on this occasion.
