From home. A 230 mile round trip for fish and chips, because I had nothing else to do.

The Thing art book that I featured in is getting a new bulked up version printed, so I’ll be getting a copy of the new softback version.

We received a water and wastewater statement from United Utilities. It was a little confusing at first, but what it boils down to is that:-

They've installed a water meter outside, but we knew that anyway, because they installed them in all properties in our estate around year ago, but didn't change our billing to be based on their readings.

For the next two years we'll be on their Lowest Bill Guarantee scheme, which means that they'll compare our water use against the fixed rateable value bill and charge us the lower amount. At the end of the trial we can extend the scheme or revert to the fixed bill.

They're changing from 10 payments a year to 12

Our last billing year came to a total of £1501.03. Based on the readings from the meter since its installation, we'll pay 1108.85 for the coming year, i.e. £392.18 less than the last year.

So much for water bills supposedly going UP.

Are you with Severn Trent? They are a fair bit cheaper than many providers, and didn’t make such big increases when the water bills went up.

We are with Severn Trent and we pay about £700 a year.

I don't know if we pay 10 or 12 months but even in the latter case Severn Trent get less than £600 from us.

It's no Manchester water though, delivered soft and fresh from The Lake District. Mmmm.

Interesting. I'd also be interested to learn how much people are paying in each region the UK.

Of course, there are other factors determining the price, e.g. whether people are paying based on the rateable value of the property as opposed to on a water meter, and the number of occupants. I noticed that out fixed rate was based on 5 people in the household, which was the case until our son moved out, but I never thought to inform UU of that change. I've created an-online account today and have revised the occupancy to 4, but I don't know if that will make any difference now that we a meter.

Cheeky bastards.... possibly.

I originally only had brief look at the statement and looking at it again, something wasn't adding up. Then I looked at the monthly breakdown and realised that the previous total was for 19 payments, not 10 or 12.

Looking at the last 12 months, the total was £998.69 and the next 12 will be £938.84, so the saving within the next year will only be £59.84

I don't know if the difference shown on the statement was incompetence on their part, or a deliberate attempt to fool us into thinking the savings were greater than they actually are.

Yeah, ours is based on a rateable value; we don’t have a water meter.

Turns out we aren’t with Severn Trent at all. We are with South Staffordshire water. Severn Trent just handle the sewerage and run-off components.
